Chill Factors and Hot Tips

Zoo Atlanta is open year-round in a variety of Atlanta weather conditions. Learn more to make the most of your visit. Check the forecast, dress for the weather, and prepare to enjoy!

We’re open rain-or-shine.

Zoo Atlanta doesn’t close for rain! If a pop-up shower decides to visit on the same day you do, take advantage of one of our many indoor areas until the wet stuff passes. These include Scaly Slimy Spectacular: The Amphibian and Reptile Experience; the Zambezi Elephant Center; Willie B. Gorilla Conservation Center; and naked mole rats, to name a few. Rain ponchos are available for purchase in the Zoo Atlanta Explorer Store.

Animals may have access to their habitats during periods of heavy rain, meaning it’s their choice whether to be outdoors. For their safety, some species, such as giraffes, will not be in their habitats on days following heavy rains.

Should you be inside the Zoo during an episode of significant inclement weather, please follow any Zoo team member instructions intended to assist you to a safe area. If your visit was significantly impacted by weather, please stop by the Membership Services Office outside of the front gates to speak with a team member.

The animals have temperature guidelines too.

We’re fortunate to enjoy a temperate climate here in Atlanta. Each animal species at the Zoo has its own temperature guidelines based on its region of origin, and temperature guidelines are in place for animal comfort and well-being. While extreme temperatures are rare, we can offer a few pointers depending on the time of year you visit.

Winter

  • Some tropical species will have access to their habitats, meaning that just like with rain, it’s their choice to come and go.
  • At feels-like temperatures below 50 degrees Fahrenheit, primates such as gorillas, orangutans, and monkeys are likely to be indoors.
  • As an insider’s tip, plan to see some of our winter-loving species, such as the red panda, first, or spend the morning in the always-tropical Scaly Slimy Spectacular, and then check in on other species later in the day once temperatures warm up.

Check out some of our cold tolerant species, or those available to see in warm indoor venues!

Red Panda

Red pandas are well-adapted for cold weather. Look for Rose in the upper hut or lounging on the front log, or in the tree to see if she is climbing or sleeping among the branches.

Summer

  • Look for animals enjoying built-in habitat design elements such as shade structures, water features, or mister fans.
  • Many of our mammal species enjoy frozen ice treats (with popsicles made from a surprising array of diet items!).
  • And don’t forget the humans – we’ve kept you in mind too!
    • Bring bathing suits for the kids to enjoy Splash Fountain.
    • Pop underneath one of many mister fans around the Zoo.
    • Or cool off with Dippin’ Dots or another of our frozen confections.
    • Need a water refill? Use one of our convenient bottle filling stations.
  • Some experiences like Treetop Trail or Giraffe Feeding may close if the feels like temperatures exceed 95 degrees Fahrenheit.

Check out some of our heat tolerant species and fun ways to beat the heat during your visit!
