Wondering what the numbers behind impaired driving look like at the national level? We pulled some numbers from the Responsibility.org website for Drunk Driving Fatality Statistics and from the National Highway Safety Administration (NHTSA).

  • Since 1982, impaired driving fatalities on our nation’s roadways have decreased by 36%, while the total number of traffic fatalities have declined 3%.
  • On average, one person dies every 39 minutes due to impaired driving.
  • In 2022, approximately 42,514 people died in traffic crashes in the United States, while an estimated 13,524 of those people had an illegal BAC level of (.08 or greater).
  • Alcohol-impaired driving fatalities accounted for 32% of the total vehicle traffic fatalities in 2022.
  • The rate of alcohol impairment among drivers involved in fatal crashes was 3.6 times higher at night than during the day.
  • Impaired driving fatalities involving individuals under the age of 21 have decreased by 83%.
  • Unfortunately, the 21- to 24-year-old age group had the highest percentage (27%) of drivers with BACs of .08% or higher in fatal crashes.
