Nippon Steel has still not received approval from the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) for its proposed acquisition of U.S. Steel.

If committee members still fail to reach a consensus, the matter will be submitted to President Biden for a final decision. In response, Trump said he would block the deal if a decision was not made before January 20.

Nippon Steel has pledged to invest at least US$2.7 billion in U.S. Steel, giving ownership to its subsidiary Nippon Steel North America, and ensuring its production meets domestic demand.

In terms of personnel, a majority of the company's board of directors will be composed of US citizens, and the current number of employees will be maintained.

The Congressional Labor Caucus said Nippon Steel's failure to provide any enforceable written commitments poses a huge threat to the future of the domestic steel industry.
