Stegra secures power deals for green steel project in Sweden

4 Dec 2024 14:47 reported by Stanley Wang

Stegra, a leading green steel developer in Sweden, has finalized two significant power supply agreements for its 700MW renewable hydrogen and steel project in Boden, Sweden, set to launch in early 2026. The deals include 8.25TWh of electricity, with 6TWh sourced from Uniper over six years and 2.25TWh from Axpo over three years.

This electricity will support green hydrogen production and an electric arc furnace at the plant, which aims to produce 2.5 million tons of steel annually using direct-reduced iron. Stegra has already secured 40-50% of its power needs for phase one through partnerships with hydropower and wind energy providers. Construction is underway, with operations projected to start by February 2026, advancing Stegra’s mission to scale sustainable steel production.
