type-host taxon
[edit]Originally proposed at Wikidata:Property proposal/Natural science
Description | the host taxon from which a parasite was originally taxinomically described |
---|---|
Represents | type host (Q108564301) |
Data type | Item |
Domain | parasite species |
Allowed values | items with instance of (P31): taxon (Q16521) (or monotypic taxon (Q310890) or fossil taxon (Q23038290)...) |
Example 1 | Longistriata blarinae (Q64148112) → Blarina brevicauda (Q1766543) |
Example 2 | Neoechinorhynchus schmidti (Q21308749) → Trachemys venusta (Q2251372) |
Example 3 | Abothrium gadi (Q2604759) → Gadus morhua (Q199788) |
Motivation
[edit]Parasitologists always provide the original species (or subspecies) in which new parasites they describe was found. For instance, the tapeworm Abothrium gadi (Q2604759) was originally found in the fish Gadus morhua (Q199788). This information can be systematically recovered in the litterature. Discussion
[edit]- Support I have already noticed its absence, WikiProject Taxonomy has more than 50 participants and couldn't be pinged. Please post on the WikiProject's talk page instead.. Christian Ferrer (talk) 17:38, 16 September 2021 (UTC)
- Support. Thierry Caro (talk) 18:46, 16 September 2021 (UTC)
- How is found in taxon (P703) related? --Succu (talk) 19:37, 16 September 2021 (UTC)
- I did not spot this property, which seems to be a catch-all one but mostly used for anatomical parts. I would say the new property proposed is more closely related to host (P2975). Totodu74 (talk) 19:50, 16 September 2021 (UTC)
- Would „parasite of“ be a better label? --Succu (talk) 19:53, 16 September 2021 (UTC)
- Comment Hum... it would probably be more explicit indeed. And now I am wondering if we would be better with adding a qualifier (typically: "subject has role (P2868): type host (Q108564301)") rather than a new property. We could do the same with other qualities such as definitive host (Q11606282), intermediate host (Q3847696) or paratenic host (Q7136118). Totodu74 (talk) 09:16, 17 September 2021 (UTC)

- "Type host" is to indicate the host where the type was found, this info is provided with the original description, e.g. https://doi.org/10.1051/parasite/2020070, therefore this property can have only one value. There is also several exemple in Wikispecies (e.g. [1], [2] [3], ect...). Christian Ferrer (talk) 10:51, 17 September 2021 (UTC)
- Support, an important property for biology.--Arbnos (talk) 23:49, 4 October 2021 (UTC)
- Support, the type-host is a major and mandatory information in the description of a new taxon of parasite. However, the name of the property could be discussed. Type-host (with hyphen) is what is generally used in the parasitological literature. Also, can we do something technical so that the value for Type-host could only be a taxon? (which is exactly what happens in the scientific literature). Sorry, I am not familiar with these discussions in Wikidata, but I would be happy to add a number of type-hosts to parasite taxa in Wikidata if this was possible Jeanloujustine (talk) 20:52, 25 November 2021 (UTC)
- @Totodu74, Christian Ferrer, Thierry Caro, Succu, Arbnos, Jeanloujustine: WikiProject Taxonomy has more than 50 participants and couldn't be pinged. Please post on the WikiProject's talk page instead. Done as type host (P10176). UWashPrincipalCataloger (talk) 06:02, 22 December 2021 (UTC)
