dissertation program

Motivation
[edit]The University of Washington Libraries is creating items in Wikidata for University of Washington electronic theses and dissertations. On each thesis title page, there is a statement "program authorized to offer degree" that names the academic department, school, or college that the student submitted the dissertation to. We use thesis submitted to (P4101) with the value University of Washington (Q219563) for all theses, but we would also like to record the particular academic department or program that the thesis emanated from. For this we need a different property. UWashPrincipalCataloger (talk) 23:42, 5 August 2021 (UTC)

- Comment Hmm, this seems rather redundant with thesis submitted to (P4101). If this is created maybe it should be just a qualifier on thesis submitted to (P4101)? ArthurPSmith (talk) 17:10, 6 August 2021 (UTC)
- It could work as a qualifier to thesis submitted to (P4101), and if the community thinks that's preferable, I would be fine with that. UWashPrincipalCataloger (talk) 17:12, 6 August 2021 (UTC)
- I would support it being a qualifier to thesis submitted to (P4101). It seems appropriate as it's a refinement. The major institutions should always be represented but not all programs will be. So it makes more sense to have __ submitted to Cornell and then add the program if it exists. I don't know if every program needs Wikidata representation. - Oppose ill-define, lacks domain, potentially problematic label. Seems redundant with thesis submitted to (P4101) given the samples. --- Jura 04:59, 7 August 2021 (UTC)
- @Jura1: I hope I can persuade you to change your opposition. The two things are not redundant at all, they are two different types of information. Perhaps it will help to understand if you have a look at the title page of one of our dissertations. Here is another one. This is typical not just of our university, but of many, at least in North America. As you can see, the thesis was submitted for the degree of doctor of philosophy to the University of Washington. It is the university, not any subordinate unit of the university, that grants the degree. However, as you can see at the bottom of the title page, there are different programs in which a graduate student will do their doctoral education and research. These are the schools, colleges, or departments of the university, and each of them may set their own requirements for the degree such a what courses a student must take. We want in our Wikidata thesis items to be able to state separately that the dissertation was submitted to the university, but also that it comes out of a particular program within the university. These two different things are stated clearly on each thesis or dissertation that is written. I am not wed to the label "dissertation program" if you or someone else can suggest a better one. I also agree with others above that this property could be a qualifier only to thesis submitted to (P4101) rather than a separate main value. The two pieces of information are definitely related to each other, but different. UWashPrincipalCataloger (talk) 16:27, 7 August 2021 (UTC)
- I have added the domain. UWashPrincipalCataloger (talk) 16:30, 7 August 2021 (UTC)

- This proposal has overwhelming support as a qualifier to thesis submitted to (P4101). Is it ready to be marked for creation? UWashPrincipalCataloger (talk) 20:22, 31 August 2021 (UTC)
