Motivation
[edit]Hello, I am adding some 2022 census data to Bangladeshi upazila. To count total population, government did something like this: male + female + hijra = total population for that upazila.
- For male, i used male population (P1540)
- For female, i used female population (P1539)
- For total, i used population (P1082)
(See for example Pirganj Upazila (Q13419437))
To add Hijra or non-binary population, I need this property. আফতাবুজ্জামান (talk) 19:41, 20 November 2024 (UTC)

[edit]- Support for census data that includes a third gender category. -wd-Ryan (Talk/Edits) 18:01, 21 November 2024 (UTC)
- Please add more detail in the proposal template, at least a description. ArthurPSmith (talk) 19:05, 21 November 2024 (UTC)
- @ArthurPSmith, @Wd-Ryan & others who might see this: I need a property for Hijra population. I am not sure if the non-binary is the right term here. Wikipedia has two article for them (Non-binary gender & Hijra (South Asia)) & it says "Hijra are transgender, intersex, or eunuch people ...".
- Should i rename this proposal as Hijra population? আফতাবুজ্জামান (talk) 00:44, 22 November 2024 (UTC)
- I would prefer something that isn't specific to hijra (Q660882). There are more of these in other cultures, like two-spirit (Q301702). It's possible "third-gender population" (third gender (Q48279)) would be better. -wd-Ryan (Talk/Edits) 00:47, 22 November 2024 (UTC)
- This term Hijra only used in South Asia and may not be suitable for other parts of ther world. @Wd-Ryan, Yes, "third-gender population" would be fine. আফতাবুজ্জামান (talk) 00:55, 22 November 2024 (UTC)
- Please try to find more examples for the proposal template, there should be at least 3. Check out this other proposal for more pieces of information that you could add to the template. -wd-Ryan (Talk/Edits) 21:12, 22 November 2024 (UTC)

- I feel we could use population (P1082) with a suitable qualifier — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 12:46, 26 November 2024 (UTC)
- Given we have female population (P1539) and male population (P1540), I think it's reasonable to have a property for counting people that don't fall under the two. I'm personally unsure whether "third-gender population" or "non-binary population" is the better name. Can someone with more knowledge of the terms say more about the different implications of the two terms, so we can chose which one is best for Wikidata. ChristianKl ❪✉❫ 12:03, 2 December 2024 (UTC)
