Properties for review

[edit]

I saw that you contribute to the chemistry task force. Do you have time to look at Crystal habit, Twinning, Fracture and Cleavage? (link) --Tobias1984 (talk) 17:15, 19 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

User:Orci is the inorganic expert here. Matthias M. (talk) 18:03, 19 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Some organic crystals also have macroscopic properties (e.g. aspirin, sugar, ...). I will also ask Orci, thanks. --Tobias1984 (talk) 18:20, 19 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Creating scripts for properties

[edit]

Hi Matthias, I'm also a Mattia (in Italian)! I've seen that you've created scripts to automate the insertions of certain properties; I've proposed some property additions, which have already been approved, mainly concerning movies, TV series and anime (and annexes such as character IDs, company IDs and person IDs), but now that are active it would be useful to populate it! I would therefore like to ask you if you could give me some lessons on customising your script for my proposed properties (e.g. TheTVDB movie ID). I'm not a code expert but I'm not a novice either! If you could help me out by telling me which lines I should customise, I could manage on my own (I hope!) for the remaining properties. --Wiccio (talk) 08:43, 10 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Take my schnittberichte.py as an example. Delete the OGDB functions as TVDB does not seem to link that in the "Other Sites" section. Then customize both the DatabaseEntry and the IMDB section, especially the BeautifulSoup which parses the HTML. You can use ChatGPT to generate the XPath/Regex based on the website source code for you. For testing, keep the IDs to loop through at the bottom small. After bug fixing and refinement, you can increase it. If you get a stable script, and it turns out to be a long-running task with many IDs, take a look at wikitech:Help:Toolforge/Running Pywikibot scripts so you don't have to run it on your own computer the whole time. Matthias M. (talk) 11:21, 10 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you @Matthias M. for the initial information but I think I overestimated myself! I have many gaps on how to proceed! If you'd like to help me, I'll summarise what I've done so far. I installed Python3, then starting from your schnittberichte.py I adapted my thetvdb.py (is the code correct?). Meanwhile on Toolforge I got myself enabled as a maintainer and opened the thetvdbot tool page. Now I should import my python code here, right? I couldn't do it, despite having installed PuTTY and having followed all the steps for creating SSH keys (I can currently log in correctly and enter the tool with the become command). I also didn't understand whether I should proceed with the OAuth request. --Wiccio (talk) 16:25, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
If you are not sure if your code is correct, you have to run it locally and carefully monitor the results. Matthias M. (talk) 17:26, 19 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Official website

[edit]

Hi, could you please not remove the official website (P856) for a software project, even if it happens to be the same as their page on GitHub, Sourceforge, Savannah, etc.? Often a software project is present on multiple sites, but there is one that the project considers to be its official presence and is updated regularly, and the others are often out of date. Or they use GitHub as their main presence, but just keep around Sourceforge for the mailing list. Also official website (P856) is used by Wikipedia and others, which often don't show the other identifiers like SourceForge project (P2209), and even if they did there is no way to indicate which of those is considered to be the project's official presence. Thanks. –LiberatorG (talk) 00:10, 14 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

On Wikipedia, it should also use Template:SourceForge (Q11055330) and Template:GitHub (Q14940522) instead of Template:Official website (Q5614958) which is the wrong semantic. Those are project sites, not websites. A project may not have a separate website which is also fine. Matthias M. (talk) 05:12, 14 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The project site meets the definition of a website. But regardless of what you want to call it, the official web presence for the project is one of the most important properties for a software project, as it is the official source of truth for current information about the project and the go-to place to fact check any claims. How are you suggesting to get this important property if not from official website (P856), considering that many projects exist on multiple sites and often many of them are not kept up to date? The templates that you mention are on Wikipedia; the point of Wikidata is that if something like the official website needs to be updated, that can be done in Wikidata and you don't need to go and edit several Wikipedia articles in languages that you don't understand, or other places that can just pull it from Wikidata. –LiberatorG (talk) 17:17, 14 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You can't add redundancy into an ontology just to indicate what you believe is a preferred site. official website (P856) is not any site and not somewhere else but the official homepage. You can add XXXXX.sourceforge.io or XXXXX.github.io there but not sourceforge.net/projects/XXXXX so please stop doing that. Matthias M. (talk) 07:16, 22 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Identifier imports

[edit]

I have noticed the many identifier imports you have done recently − I tried indexing them at Wikidata:WikiProject_Video_games/Log#May_5, for reference − that’s really great job! Very happy to see that :) (Also happy to see someone else uses maintains linking to (P10568) ;) )

One note regarding the imports: while the source is in the edit summary, would it be possible to also a reference on the statement − using either stated in (P248) or matched by identifier from (P11797)?

(perhaps I mentioned that to you before and you already answered it was not possible, apologies if that’s the case and I don’t recall ^_^')

Thanks again and keep up the great work! Jean-Fred (talk) 18:51, 19 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for noticing. I usually don't only use one property to match but all that are available it is just that some like Mobygames are much more abundant and always generate the first hit. Adding a reference is both redundant and bloat. I sometimes see tools referencing with the link itself. The identifier is correct even without the reference. Oftentimes multiple sites link an identifier and then showing a single hit would also be wrong. I just skip when there is already a property. I however state the source in claim creation so it is transparent in the history. You can find a log about my activity in the commit history together with the source code at Wikimedia Gitlab. Matthias M. (talk) 19:02, 19 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, as you've worked on the page, I thought I could leave you a note. I just removed the en-wiki (Violent Cop) from that item to "merge" it with the zh.wiki article but I'm not sure I was doing things properly so I stopped. I honestly forgot how to merge things on Wikidata (if I ever knew), and if you know how to do it or want to tell me how to, I'd appreciate. Sorry for the trouble and thanks. Mushy Yank (talk) 23:25, 28 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I only did an automated match to Schnittberichte.com (Q1374723). No idea about that movie. Matthias M. (talk) 10:00, 29 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for helping in restoring some/all my created video game items that were deleted at some point

[edit]

I'm thankful that some or all of my items got restored thanks to your actions that had at some point been deleted due to not otherwise meeting notability guidelines, but were kept because they are related to a WikiProject. Wikidata:Administrators'_noticeboard/Archive/2024/07.

I am thankful that The Squirrel Conspiracy decided to take a look at my game creations because it helped me learn that not all games are notable for Wikidata.

I'm thankful that you also decided to take a look and considered these items related to the Wikidata:WikiProject Video games. Extra happy that you are a member of that WikiProject because then this post to your talk page makes extra sense.

Still I feel the responsibility lingering on me and I have some ideas I'd like to propose to you to improve the WikiProject and I'd like your input on this. I'm thinking about creating two new sections on the WikiProject for Video games and I'll explain why I think they may be needed, in no particular order:

  • Notability review of video games. It would allow editors who are "shy" or reluctant to create new Wikidata Q items of video games or are unsure of if the video game they want to add is notable enough and other editors could comment on if a game in the review is notable or not. The page could also be used for like 'guidelines' of what is notable for the WikiProject's standards. I got some games here which I have not created and if the review page is made I could copy them over to the page. May make them more visible and I'm looking for comments on whether they should be added or not: User:SuperUltraHardCoreGamer/SteamDeckContributors#Before_2024
  • Steam Deck - this is probably my weakest argument. I have two examples on how to edit items that are either playable or verified. This page could make it easier for editors to learn how to add playable or verified titles for this console, the page could help in coordination between editors, what properties and values to use and in references as well. The examples are on my user page here User:SuperUltraHardCoreGamer#Example_items_which_enable_editors_to_learn_a_specific_thing, 2 examples.

Do you think these two suggestions could help the WikiProject and do you have any of your own opinions of what could improve the Wikiproject?

Also I have not forgotten our talk on my talk page regarding mix n match. Long story short: I don't have access to it(VPN always on) and therefore can't use it.

Longer story that can be skipped:

Using a VPN for ideological reasons(privacy among other stuff) and there is no way I will stop using it when editing on Wikimedia projects, I still can use the web more or less with VPN always on. If one day VPNs are ultimately blocked I guess I have to look into how to host a local instance of Wikibase(which I doubt I have the skills for) and I don't know if I'll have the interest nor the motivation to run it but in my dreams I dream of an "ultimate game database" which is using Wikibase as its software, I hope though that can be Wikidata. SuperUltraHardCoreGamer (talk) 19:49, 30 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Ask in Wikidata talk:WikiProject Video games. Regards Matthias M. (talk) 21:15, 30 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I'm still adding distributed by = Steam and I'll explain why and what we might need to do for this to change, not only for me but for all users adding video game data

[edit]

I'm still using distributed by = Steam even though I agree with you that distributed by = Steam is not necessary if there is already a Steam Application ID on a video game. Someone may convince me otherwise but I need to hear arguments first, not feelings.

So why did I just moments ago add it? Because the property for Steam application ID (P1733) has in it
item-requires-statement constraint =
property = distributed by.

Though that does not answer the question why did I add it? The answer to that is simple:
I want to fulfill all the constraints so they "stop bothering me"...although "back in the day" IsThereAnyDeal ID (P12570) was required on Steam Application ID but I found that so illogical that I opened up a talk page topic protesting about it and on Project chat.

Later it looked like other users agreed that it didn't make sense to force all users to add "random identifier X" to Steam Application ID which clearly stands on its own, also especially based on the latest "consensus" on Wikiproject Video Games.(my opinion).

Maybe in the end you ask me why I add this to your talk page. Well on Wikiproject Video Games you added a topic where you questioned distributed by being used on video game items, so I'm just sharing here part of my live editing process so you can get insight into what's causing people to add distributed by to video games. I hope this is helpful. SuperUltraHardCoreGamer (talk) 09:47, 22 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

That task can probably be automated. Matthias M. (talk) 10:12, 22 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Please explain. What can probably be automated? I just don't like guessing. SuperUltraHardCoreGamer (talk) 10:14, 22 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
May I add, are you only interested in the automation? You are not interested in what causes editors to do manual edits? Cause if you are not then I consider this matter fully resolved. I'm gonna continue doing whatever I was doing in that case cause I'm doing manual edits. The only thing I'm good at :D SuperUltraHardCoreGamer (talk) 10:16, 22 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

You reverted one of my edits on my own talk page where I tried to change the title from the "Original Title" to "(RESOLVED) Original Title"

[edit]

You reverted one of my edits on my own talk page where I tried to change the title from the "Original Title" to "(RESOLVED) Original Title". Now since you reverted that edit do you have a suggestion for how I mark it as resolved? SuperUltraHardCoreGamer (talk) 13:06, 22 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Try Template:Section resolved -- Matthias M. (talk) 13:58, 22 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
