Variety reports that Amy Adams has been cast in Netflix’s adaptation of Hillbilly Elegy, and if this isn’t the role that nets her a long-deserved, long-overdue Oscar, then we will finally know for sure that the fix is in. Elegy is based on the best-selling memoir of the same name by J.D. Vance, and will be directed by Ron Howard. Just read this plot description and try to convince yourself it does not scream Oscar bait: “a modern exploration of the American Dream follows three generations of an Appalachian family as told by its youngest member, a Yale Law student forced to return to his hometown.” Appalachia! Ron Howard! Three generations! And Vanessa Taylor, who wrote the Academy Award-winning Shape of Water, handled the script. The AMPAS and Netflix better get over their gripes by the time Elegy is Oscar-eligible, because it’s Adams’s time to shine.
