Youngstown man faces OVI, other charges in Liberty

LIBERTY — A Youngstown man pleaded not guilty at his arraignment Monday after being arrested on a charge of OVI by Liberty police on Belmont Avenue Thursday night.

Shaquone Lockett, 28, of Youngstown, was charged with OVI, driving under a non-compliant suspension, marked lakes, no seat belt and open container.

According to the police report, an officer was observing traffic at the intersection of Belmont and Gypsy Lane when he saw a red Hyundai sedan turn without using its turn signal. The officer noticed the car drive onto the center line after following the vehicle for a short distance and pulled him over.

The report states that when the officer made contact with Lockett, he smelled an “extreme odor” of alcohol and marijuana coming from the vehicle.

Lockett told the officer he had one drink that evening, showing him a green can in his cup holder and using garbled and slurred speech while his eyes were red and glassy.

The officer asked Lockett to step out of the vehicle with the intent of getting him to attempt a field sobriety test, explaining to him that he wasn’t under arrest and he wanted to ensure he wasn’t driving impaired, according to the report.

However, Lockett ignored the request, stating he wasn’t drunk but admitting he also probably was, because of the little cans of alcohol he consumed. He eventually stepped out of the vehicle, and a probable cause search revealed an additional can of Budweiser and an unopened unknown liquor in the front passenger seat.

The officer administered two portions of the field sobriety test, but Lockett stated he wouldn’t do the walk and turn portion after walking an exaggerated four steps in what the officer believed to be an attempt, stating he would not waste the officer’s time.

Lockett’s bail was set at $5,000 and he’s set to appear back in Girard Municipal Court for a pre-trial hearing Jan. 29, court records show.

Starting at $2.99/week.
