Eduard Limonov (Savenko), Soviet dissident who retained a juvenile sense of mischief through to his old age, for which he was nicknamed “Grandpa” by his humoristic understanders; superlative essayist who did for sex in the Russian language what Dostoevsky had done for family relations; warrior-essayist driven by overflowing passionarity in the vein of Yukio Mishima and Bronze Age Pervert (though one who avidly embraced his own degeneracy), Russian nationalist, reincarnator of National Bolshevism, and prophet of the Russian Spring – he participated in armed patrols with the Bosnian Serbs and fired a machine gun against a Croatian army barracks, mounted a Russian flag over the city of Sevastopol in 1999, and served two years in jail for plotting an armed revolt against Kazakhstan thanks to bugman Russian courts – died on March 17, 2020 at the age of 77.

I only got the pleasure of seeing him once. He used to hold rallies on the 31st of each month that qualified at The Monument to the Heroes of 1905 in Moscow, where he gave impassioned speeches to his relatively small but dedicated bands of followers. I wrote about one such rally in 2017, as well as about his wider views, in the article Limonov Mindset.

Although the NazBols were once heavily oppositionist, they have since moderated, with Limonov himself learning to stop worrying and love PUTLER! after Euromaidan and the events of 2014. Since 2016, he even wrote a column for RT’s Russian language service.

Unlike his long-time foil Alexander Solzhenitsyn, who shared his despair over the cack-handed manner in which the USSR was dissolved, Eddie at least lived to see Crimea return to Russia – a cause that he had agitated for since the early 1990s. Considering that we might well be at the tail end of this current wave of globalization – a phenomenon that he always despised as the source of the global infestation of the bugmen – I suppose that he picked as good a time to die as any, just in time to see the prospect of its demise appear on the horizon.

There’s barely a single Communist (and that he was) whom I would honor so, but if anybody has earned the right to that beloved phrase of theirs, it’s Eddie. REST IN POWER.

***

After all, women are not really attracted to money at all (money attracts only the weakest mares), or a man’s housekeeping – they are attracted to an aura of complete independence. They understand that the most charming thing that can be in a man is a claim to the role of a tyrant in building the world. A fighter against decadence. That’s absolutely certain.

Eduard Limonov. 1943-2020.

I would have liked to see Liminov rate women. It would have been entertaining.

Some time back, I was struck by hearing an old Chinese woman call a young unmarried woman “strong.” I interpreted it as a sort of complement. Not exactly backhanded, but not something to stroke the ego. Meaning something like, you could have a lot of children. I don’t think that you could hear a similar complement in the Anglosphere, but I wonder if Russia might be different.

I get what you mean, something like "hearty" as a descriptor. That a woman could pop a bunch of kids out and not get bowled over. Perhaps this is why I find this extremely thin female form repulsive to a degree. It would be interesting to see a comparison between prole vs burgeoise preferences in women. Not in terms of ideal women but something more akin to realistic perceptions of the type of woman they would like to obtain to have children with. I would estimate higher classes might go for a more explicitely asthetic type of women since their partnership would be more for vanity and perhaps less children, whereas lower classes might go for a more stout partner to have, historically, strong children to work along with a less fragile partner.

Going by film, photos and paintings, I'm pretty sure the rail-thin ideal of our day was not a thing with any social class until the 50s (Audrey Hepburn) or even 60s (Twiggy). And even in the 60s, bust queens like Sophia Loren, Raquel Welch, Zsa Zsa Gabor were all over the late-night shows.

Ava Gardner, Lauren Bacall, Joan Crawford, Bette Davis, Barbara Stanwyck, and the other greats of Hollywood's golden era all looked like healthy farmer's daughters.

An episodic “”fictional memoir,”” originally published in Russian in 1978, by a youngish emigre poet living in New York City. “”I am on welfare. I live at your expense, you pay taxes and I don’t do a fucking thing.”” So says bitter, narcissistic, self-pitying Eddie–who narrates a series of encounters (mostly sexual) in an oddly translated prose-mixture of obscenity, tin-eared slang, and tirade. Frustrated with his writing career in Russia (“”what I did would never reach the masses””), Eddie has come to America for creative freedom. . . only to find utter misery. No one’s interested in his work. His wife Elena has left him for a decadent American career as a fashion model: “”she has a cunt, for which there are buyers–you–and I don’t have a cunt.”” And the “”system”” in the US, he finds, is just as oppressive as the one back home: “”We shag-assed over here, and having seen what the life is like, many if not all would shag-ass fight back. . . .”” So Eddie hates America, hates his occasional demeaning jobs (e.g., as a hotel-restaurant busboy), and hates women. His post-Elena liaisons with women are unsatisfying: a non-sexual involvement with American radical Carol (“”her party was nothing but a Petit-bourgeois study group””); a rough time with Jewish, non-orgasmic Sonya (“”I’m going to buy you an artificial member, and I’m going to fuck you with it until you fall off the bed””); a particularly unpleasant interlude with Russian-speaking Roseanne. Instead, Eddie finds pseudo-epic fulfillment with black men he meets on the street: dangerous Chris (“”I did not merely accommodate his strong thick cock in my mouth, no, this love we were engaged in, these actions, symbolized much more–to me they symbolized life. . . I was receiving communion from his cock””); and bum Johnny–“”punk, filth of the streets, panhandler, least of the least,”” a preachily symbolic underclass-figure who “”tenderly kissed my cock, laughed with me, clasped me to him, kissed my poopka and shoulders.”” And finally, after a walk around Manhattan and re-humiliation from Elena, Eddie discourses to himself on “”the injustice of a world in which one who loves is not fucking needed””. . . and signs off by weepily saying to the buildings of Madison Ave.: “”Fuck you, you cocksucking bastards!”” Here and there, Limonov writes effectively in the Russian tradition of grimly comic despair/irony; and the glimpses of emigre life at its most disillusioned or sordid are intriguing. But for the most part this is a tedious whine of a memoir/novel–with neither the zest of a picaresque nor the emotional drama of an absorbing self-portrait.

On the photo Mr. Karlin has kindly included, we can see fans of comrade Limonov with flags with the image of a pineapple hand grenade.
This is because in the 1990’s he made the name “limonka” (in Russian the pineapple grenade is in fact the lemon grenade) his own, in a sense mixing his surname and his personality. He even used to publish a party newspaper “Limonka”, with the slogan “Eat the rich, read Limonka!”

Additionally, Limonov was a locus through whom intersected various interesting scenes and people of the era. Here he is with a young Dugin and a young Letov.

*Egor Letov* (RIP) was the composer, singer, and guitar player of Grazdanskaya Oborona (Citizen Defence) a Siberian psychedelic punk outfit which was super important for the latter-day Soviet and then modern Russian rock scene.
He was the Russian Syd Barrett+Jim Morrison+Johnny Rotten all rolled into one. Monstrously prolific and monstrously poetic.
As a youth he was nabbed by the KGB and hospitalized for “mild schizophrenia” which what they did back in the Brezhnev-Andropov years to dissidents, where he…went through wild times. Once Letov came out his stuff acquired a strong Ken Kessey layer.

In his last album before he died—his most psychedelic and laid back one, his farewell one some might say—Letov included mellow rocking hits such as Slava Psihonavtam (Glory to the Psychonauts).

For a while it looked like they’d call the Omsk International Airport in his name, but it didn’t pan out, in spite of popular support for the idea. As a compromise a smaller airport got the name. https://www.ntv.ru/novosti/2115303/

*Aleksandr Dugin* has today reinvented himself as a 21st century mix of Berdyaev and Ivan Illyin, but back in the day when he was part of the decadent 1990’s scene with Letov and Limonov, he had a pretty legendary bad trip freakout, about “lake dwelling, giant cat worshipping reed people who are coming to invade us through poisoned wind! Close the window bro, they’re poisoning us!”

Let’s wrap up this headcount of the “important names of the weirdo 1990’s scene” — the author *Victor Pelevin*. He started out as a sort of post-Castaneda Iain Banks/Martin Amis/Richard Bach type, but has since matured into the “Russian Michel Houellebecq on acid”.

Read his Empire V (2006), really, read it. Here it is online: https://graycity.net/victor-pelevin/221554-empire_v.html One of the most important novels of the century so far, but very easy to read.

Everyone (except tiny minority of psychopaths) have morals, everyone believes there are good things, bad things and worst things of all.

For the left today, the worst thing that exists is racism.
Imagine lifelong progressive activist, who was also lifelong hardcore racist.
No, you cannot imagine - regardless how much such person supported all progressive agenda, he, all people connected to him, and all people who failed to condemn him would be mercilessly purged from the left. And if such person dropped dead, no one on the left would mourn him.

I think that everyone would agree that the left takes racism seriously.

For the alt-right today, the worst thing that exists is degeneracy.
Alt-right say they are not haters, they say they hate no one. Alt-right movement is about love of White race, it is about saving the White race from degeneracy, because degeneracy is the worst thing that exists.

    What is degeneracy?
It is about sex. Any sex act except between one White man and one White woman for the purpose of procreating White children is degenerate. There are many forms of degeneracy, and homosexuality is the absolutely worst of all.

    This is what alt-right says.
And then, alt-right celebrates awoved homosexual as a hero and mourns his passing.

Seeing this, would you be surprised if outside observer thinks that alt-right movement is not about any "morals" at all?

True, but I think this supports the widely held theory that a more overweight population, oddly enough, makes thinness more glamorous, since it then suggests moderation, discipline, etc. I don't agree with this a hundred percent -- one could make the case that less flab highlights facial features better and so is objectively more aesthetic -- but only a fool would claim that there is never a "trend" component to aesthetics.

For the left today, the worst thing that exists is racism.
Imagine lifelong progressive activist, who was also lifelong hardcore racist.
No, you cannot imagine – regardless how much such person supported all progressive agenda, he, all people connected to him, and all people who failed to condemn him would be mercilessly purged from the left.

True, but I think this supports the widely held theory that a more overweight population, oddly enough, makes thinness more glamorous, since it then suggests moderation, discipline, etc. I don’t agree with this a hundred percent — one could make the case that less flab highlights facial features better and so is objectively more aesthetic — but only a fool would claim that there is never a “trend” component to aesthetics.
