INDOOR FARMERS MARKET: The Troy Waterfront Farmers Market is held in the Atrium every Saturday from 9 am to 2 pm from November through April and features most of the 100 vendors from its popular outdoor market. SNOWSHOE RACE: Brookhaven Winter Park, the Town of Greenfield’s cross-country skiing and snowshoeing park, is having a 5K Snowshoe Race on March 2 at 10 a.m. The cost is $25 and includes a long-sleeved athletic shirt and prizes and giveaways. HISTORICAL SOCIETY MEETING: Stephentown Historical Society will meet on Sunday, March 3, at 2 p.m. at the Stephentown Heritage Center, 4 Staples Road. Historical reenactor Phyllis Chapman will appear for an afternoon visit as “Dolley Madison: Queen of Washington City.” The charming wife of President James Madison will share her tales of the early days of our nation’s capital. Her social and political “style” fostered a sense of national unity between the rowdy factions of early Washington and during the War of 1812. Forced to evacuate Washington when the British burned the city, her courage under fire inspired Americans to continue the fight, and never surrender. The presentation is free and open to the public. HISTORICAL SOCIETY MEETING: New Scotland Historical Association’s March Program:
“Finding a Place of Origin for Your Irish Ancestors.” People with Irish ancestors are often eager to find out where in Ireland they came from. This can be a challenge, given the limited information in historic documents, especially for the famine era (1840-60). Professional genealogist Lisa Dougherty will discuss sources in the USA to help identify a place of origin
for your Irish ancestor that can help further your research in Irish sources. JEWISH STORYTELLING: Saratoga Jewish Community Arts presents its 10th Annual Matthew M. Neugroschel Storytelling Event on Sunday, March 3. This year’s program features local and regional bards telling both traditional and contemporary tales. Historian and Education Director at the Schoharie Crossing Historic Site David Brooks will join the Galway Preservation Society’s March meeting to present a talk on “DeWitt’s Duel”, exploring the life of DeWitt Clinton and the politics of early America and New York State. DeWitt Clinton was governor of New York State, a US Senator and Mayor of New York City. DeWitt Clinton has been called the “Father of the Erie Canal” for his role in orchestrating the building of the Canal by some, while others called the project “Clinton’s Folly” or “Clinton’s Ditch”. David Brooks will explain how political wranglings and intrigue led to DeWitt’s Duel on the plains of Weehawken, New Jersey across the river from New York City. COMMUNITY MEAL: YWCA of the Greater Capital Region, Inc., located at 21 First St. in Troy, serves a weekly community meal from 5 to 6 p.m. each Tuesday. It is a free-of-charge, to-go dinner provided for YWCA residents as well as anyone in the community. All are welcome to join us each week for a free, nutritious cooked meal. Meals are prepared by a variety of volunteers including but not limited to YWCA-GCR staff, residents, community members and students. Residents are encouraged to participate in preparation of the meals and will be assisted by staff in menu planning, shopping and time management. We serve an average of 75 people per week. The YWCA-GCR also partners with community organizations to set up booths at weekly Community Meal to advertise, promote and engage guests in services. TROY CITY COUNCIL MEETING: Troy City Council meetings are held at 7 p.m. on the first Thursday of every month in the Council Chambers at City Hall, located at 433 River St. in Troy. SIDEWALK WARRIORS: Each Thursday evening in the parking lot at 35 State St. in Troy, dozens of volunteers set up a large number of tables for Sidewalk Warriors’ weekly distribution. At these tables, visitors can find hot foods, sandwiches, produce, pantry items and essentials. The group often provides special distributions such as towels, linens, pillows, winter boots, underwear, socks or laundry detergent. The folks who attend the distribution may be experiencing homelessness or food insecurity, or they may simply be running short on resources at the end of the month. Set up for the weekly Sidewalk Warriors distribution events begins at 5 p.m. each Thursday, and volunteers begin serving at 6 p.m., no matter what the weather. TREE TAPPING: At Moreau Lake State Park, 10am. A homeschool popup event. Join an educator in the nature center for a quick history of making maple syrup, the process from beginning to end, and if you are able, come on a short walk to tap a tree! IRISH LIBRARY PROGRAM: Celebrate a bit of Irish culture at the Galway Public Library on March 7 at 6:30 pm. Master Martial Arts instructors John Borter and Trish Chiovari will demonstrate the Irish Martial Art of “Bataireacht,” or Shillelagh Fighting, to library guests. John and Trish will show you the moves and tell you why this art was such an integral part of life in Ireland long ago. They’ll even get some of you into the act! The rich history and story of the blackthorn, the trees shillelaghs are traditionally made from, will be told by Christopher Shaw, who will also sing a few Irish songs and bend your ear with a story or two. CIVIL WAR ROUND TABLE: The Capital District Civil War Round Table will hold its monthly meeting on March 8 at the Watervliet Senior Center, 1501 Broadway (across from city hall). Potsdam historian Jan Wojcik will speak on the April 1865 Battle of Appomattox, which led to the surrender of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia and effectively ended the Civil War. Social hour with light refreshments starts at 6 pm, and the presentation begins at 7 pm after a short business meeting. All are welcome.
WIGGLY WANDERERS: At Moreau Lake State Park, 9:30am. Wiggly wanderers is a casual and fun program that is offered to walking toddlers, carriable babies and their caregivers. This will be a beginner’s hike/wander series for toddlers who are ready to move and caregivers who are willing and able to baby wear and/or carry their toddler if their legs get too tired. We will not plan too much distance walking and we will rely on teachable moments to carry us through these experiences. Strollers will not work for these programs. While you do not need to attend each week, we will continue to build our toddlers hiking skills as well as their caregivers’ confidence taking the children into the woods to explore. BARBIE FORUM: To commemorate the 65th birthday of the controversial doll, the League of Women Voters is holding a forum titled, “Baffling Barbie: Feminist Friend or Foe?” on Saturday, March 9 from 10am to noon at the Clifton Park-Halfmoon Library. The public is invited to attend.
Headlining the event will be Rosemary Armao, an investigative reporter, podcaster, professor at UAlbany, and previously on WAMC’s “Round Table and Media Project.” Panelists representing four generations of women will share their perceptions of how Barbie influenced their views of what it means to be a woman in American culture and if the “Barbie” movie changed their perceptions of the doll’s impact. THEATER VOLUNTEER OPEN HOUSE: On Saturday, March 9th Home Made Theater will hold an open house for both potential and existing volunteers. The open house will be held from 10:00am-12:00pm at Home Made Theater’s Wilton Mall headquarters, which is located in the wing nearest the Saratoga Hospital offices. Most of the work of producing live theater at Home Made Theater is done by volunteers. New members of the team are always welcome and appreciated. TRAIL STEWARD MEETING: At Moreau Lake State Park, 10am. A meeting to introduce the trail steward program to newcomers. The duties of a trail steward include walking the trails of Moreau Lake State Park to identify and report maintenance needs, light trail maintenance including cutting back branches with supplied hand saws and loppers and hanging trail signs when necessary. This meeting will provide crucial information on what to look for on the trails. Established trail stewards are welcome to come, but it is not mandatory. This meeting is free. There will also be ensemble roles available. Teens will be considered for some of the adult roles as well as the ensemble. All ethnicities and gender identities are encouraged to audition. For the audition, please prepare 32 bars of a song. Singers must provide their own music in their key. No A Cappella singing please. Readings will be provided. Bring a current photo (cannot be returned), and a resume (or list of any prior theater experience). THEATER AUDITIONS: Home Made Theater announces open auditions for their June production of “The Secret Garden.” The auditions will be held on March 10th from 1-5pm (children and teens only), March 11th from 6-9pm (teens and adults only), and March 12th (adults only) from 6:30-9:30pm at Home Made Theater’s headquarters at the Wilton Mall (near Saratoga Hospital). Callbacks (by invitation only) will be held on March 13th. The primary cast consists of four adult men, four adult women, one boy, and one girl (approximately 10 years old). There will also be ensemble roles available. Teens will be considered for some of the adult roles as well as the ensemble. All ethnicities and gender identities are encouraged to audition. For the audition, please prepare 32 bars of a song. Singers must provide their own music in their key. No A Cappella singing please. Readings will be provided. Bring a current photo (cannot be returned), and a resume (or list of any prior theater experience). Be prepared to list all potential conflicts from the first rehearsal through closing (with the exception of Tech Week and performances, conflicts can be worked around if known about in advance). At these tables, visitors can find hot foods, sandwiches, produce, pantry items and essentials. The group often provides special distributions such as towels, linens, pillows, winter boots, underwear, socks or laundry detergent. The folks who attend the distribution may be experiencing homelessness or food insecurity, or they may simply be running short on resources at the end of the month. Set up for the weekly Sidewalk Warriors distribution events begins at 5 p.m. each Thursday, and volunteers begin serving at 6 p.m., no matter what the weather. KNIT & CROCHET GROUP: Join the Troy Public Library for a bi-weekly stitching group from 10 to 11 am on every first and third Friday of the month. Whether you have experience knitting or crocheting or you want to start learning a new skill, this group is for you! Participants will work together to stitch blankets and other needed items to donate to local homeless shelters and outreach groups. Participants are also welcome to work on their own personal projects. Bring your own knitting needles and crochet hooks or use what we have available. WIGGLY WANDERERS: At Moreau Lake State Park, 9:30am. Wiggly wanderers is a casual and fun program that is offered to walking toddlers, carriable babies and their caregivers. This will be a beginner’s hike/wander series for toddlers who are ready to move and caregivers who are willing and able to baby wear and/or carry their toddler if their legs get too tired. We will not plan too much distance walking and we will rely on teachable moments to carry us through these experiences. Strollers will not work for these programs. While you do not need to attend each week, we will continue to build our toddlers hiking skills as well as their caregivers’ confidence taking the children into the woods to explore. HISTORICAL SOCIETY MEETING: Join the Greenbush Historical Society on Sunday, March 17 at 2pm for an informative talk on the friendship between Martin Van Buren (our 8th President) and Washington Irving (author of the famous American ghost story “The Headless Horseman of Sleepy Hollow “). Irving spent a great deal of time at the Van Buren estate in Kinderhook which was named “Lindenwald.” The mansion is now a national historic site along with much of the original farm property. FOREST BATHING: At Moreau Lake State Park, 10am. The spring equinox will kick off our weekly forest bathing once again! Coined shinrin-yoku in Japan in the 1980’s, forest bathing is the ecotherapeutic practice of spending time immersed in nature, absorbing it with all of your senses. The physiological and psychological benefits last for days afterward with the additional benefit of a new appreciation of our precious woodland and its inhabitants. This is a beginner-rated walk along the Nature Trail with long pauses to sit and enhance our awareness of our surroundings and it is approximately a 2-hour program. A small mat is beneficial to ensure a dry seat. This program is limited to those age 14 and up. Pay $5 per person (cash or check) at the office upon arrival. Of many traditional ways to acknowledge the spring equinox, a favorite includes celebrating the re-awakening of the earth with new growth, and stating intentions for the new season. EAGLE WATCH: At Moreau Lake State Park, 8:30am. Join a Park Educator on a convoy-style journey along the Hudson River to try to spot our local Bald Eagles. FARM SAFETY CLASS: To make your farm a safer place to work, Cornell Cooperative Extension Albany County is sponsoring a meeting on farm safety & funding that is available to help improve safety features on your property. This class is at 24 Martin Rd, Voorheesville, from 10am to noon. Agriculture is the most hazardous industry in the nation. Farmers perform chores which pose threats to their health and safety every day. Tractor rollovers, pto entanglements, animal handling, and highway accidents are some of the leading causes of injuries. The New York Center for Agriculture Medicine and Health (NYCAMH) will be discussing safety on the farm and the John May Farm Safety Fund. This fund will provide up to 50% of the cost to upgrade safety features on your farm, up to $5,000. Such things as animal handling facilities, rollover protection, electrical work, and much more can be covered. Plan on attending to learn how to apply for this funding. CEMETERY ASSOCIATION MEETING: The Castleton Cemetery Association will hold its annual Lot Owner’s and Their Families meeting on Thursday, March 28th, at the V.F.W. AUTHOR TALK: On March 28, Phil Bayly, author of the “Murder on Skis” series, will be speaking at the Cohoes Public Library, temporarily located at the Cohoes Senior Center, 10 Cayuga Plaza, Cohoes. The 1:30 pm event will be free and open to the public. Mr. Bayly had a long and illustrious career as a journalist for over 4 decades including 15 yrs. as an anchor on WNYT. Upon retirement, he combined his love of writing and skiing to create the Murder on Skis series. There are currently 5 books in the series that follows reporter JC Snow as she literally uncovers bodies from Montana and Colorado to the Adirondacks. At these tables, visitors can find hot foods, sandwiches, produce, pantry items and essentials. The group often provides special distributions such as towels, linens, pillows, winter boots, underwear, socks or laundry detergent. The folks who attend the distribution may be experiencing homelessness or food insecurity, or they may simply be running short on resources at the end of the month. Set up for the weekly Sidewalk Warriors distribution events begins at 5 p.m. each Thursday, and volunteers begin serving at 6 p.m., no matter what the weather. Whether you have experience knitting or crocheting or you want to start learning a new skill, this group is for you! INDOOR FARMERS MARKET: The Troy Waterfront Farmers Market is held in the Atrium every Saturday from 9 am to 2 pm from November through April and features most of the 100 vendors from its popular outdoor market. The Troy Atrium is located in downtown Troy with entrances on Fulton Street, 3rd Street, Broadway and 4th Street. Free parking is available in the City’s 5th Street Parking Garage, Riverfront Park, the Green Island Bridge lots and on city streets. No dogs are allowed in the Atrium, with exceptions made for service animals. The indoor market will be expanding to the second floor to include an indoor dining area where customers will be able to eat prepared food from vendors. COMMUNITY MEAL: YWCA of the Greater Capital Region, Inc., located at 21 First St. in Troy, serves a weekly community meal from 5 to 6 p.m. each Tuesday. It is a free-of-charge, to-go dinner provided for YWCA residents as well as anyone in the community. All are welcome to join us each week for a free, nutritious cooked meal. Meals are prepared by a variety of volunteers including but not limited to YWCA-GCR staff, residents, community members and students. Residents are encouraged to participate in preparation of the meals and will be assisted by staff in menu planning, shopping and time management. We serve an average of 75 people per week. The YWCA-GCR also partners with community organizations to set up booths at weekly Community Meal to advertise, promote and engage guests in services. COMMUNITY DINNER: Redemption Church of Christ serves a free dinner every Tuesday from 4-6 pm at the church, 1511 6th Ave. in Watervliet. All are welcome. A takeout option is available. Delivery is available for those not able to attend in person.
