Speaking to Deadline, they have asked for privacy at this time. Jeff is survived by his wife Aubrey, mom Barbara Stern and stepfather Roger Stern, dad Scott Baena and stepmother Michele Baena, brother Brad Baena and stepsister and stepbrother Bianca Gabay and Jed Fluxman.
Tributes have been pouring in for Jeff on social media. "What horrific news. Prayers with Aubrey Plaza, and all those who knew and loved Baena," one fan wrote on X.
Another posted, "Thatâs so young condolences," while a third person added, "My thoughts to Aubrey and her family during this difficult time." Someone else said, "Such a tragic loss."
Jeff was born and raised in Miami before he moved to New York to attend film school. He started his filmmaking career in Los Angeles with his debut movie Life After Beth, which he worked on with his wife.
Jeff is also well-known for his films The Little Hours, Horse Girl and Spin Me Round. When asked about his career, the filmmaker admitted it was "all I ever want to do."
He told Seensome in 2014 when talking about his debut film, "It felt really comfortable and fun. Iâve been a writer for twelve years now and it was always a means to an end, I never wanted to be a writer, I wanted to be a director so this was always my intention and it felt right."
Aubrey, known for her roles in The White Lotus and Parks and Recreation, married Jeff in 2021 after the pair had been together for a decade. She announced their marriage on Instagram in May that year.
"So proud of my darling husband @jeffbaena for dreaming up another film that takes us to italia to cause some more trouble [devil emoji]," she wrote as she posted about their movie Spin Me Round.
