I learned how to play Chess recently. More specifically I learned how to stare at a board and move little men until someone said "Yeah. You're allowed to do that".
You can't beat a good game for killin' time and havin fun. Solitaire, Hide and Seek, Pictionary, Uno, Keep-away, Pin the Bandaid on the Fella.
Think humans are unique to the love of games like keep-away?
Think again.
Today on a special episode of, Will They Eat It? ... The chickens play a rousing game of Keep-away.
Chicken Treats Keep Away Game
Cuddles, Cheez Whiz, Norma and Walnut play keep away.
I realize I'm teaching my chickens incredibly poor manners by encouraging them to play with their food. I do not care. Mind your own business. You'd be completely mortified if I told you what I let them get away with during last week's game of Pictionary.
Susan
Chickens are cute but where is the official announcer? He's cuter!:-)
Molly
Do chickens really like banjo music or is that just one more stereotype? (and why can't I see all 20 comments? Maybe someone has already addressed the topic & I'm wasting everybody's time) AND now I want to hug your chickens.
Mary Kay
LMAO - thanks Karen that made my morning!!!
Diana
Hi Karen, I think your chicks would be able to retieve thinks.Haha
They look like commandos!!!
really funny

My chickens ate tomatoes all summer. Trouble is, they ate them while still ripening on the vine!! Oh, well, we had plenty.
Their fav food right now is the guts and little seeds from a small melon I grew this fall. I don't know they name cause I planted it from seeds out of a melon I bought at the store. Anyway, they are baseball sized melons and the seeds are tiny. The chickens will grab big beaks full of the guts and seeds and run off and eat them away from all the others. But every so often they are merrily munchining away and another will come steal their gob which will immediately trigger a frenzy of chicken chasing with much hilarity.

Mine did the exact same thing with a grass snake one of them found. After 10 min or so, I tried to catch the current winner to put the poor snake out of it's misery, which prompted said hen to swallow it whole.

i love a good belly laugh before breakfast! and chess? really karen who r u trying to kid? you don't have near enough patience for chess. you have to sit for longer than 20 minutes you know. by the way do the chickens like oatmeal?
Karen J
Our dogs (William and Kate) do the same thing with cherry tomatoes.
Unfortuneately (for us) they've figured out how to pull them off the bush first, then the chase/play begins!
P.S. I recall you mentioning once that your fella only liked well behaved dogs... I'm afraid our tomatoe eating pooches wouldn't make his cut:(
Kim
You are too much -- loved the puff of wind up the fluffy behind.

Nothing funnier than a fat chicken running. Except me running.
Mary
I just realized about half way through that I'm sitting here at work, completely absorbed in watching chickens play keepaway.....
Thanks - I needed this!
And yes, we noticed the lack of the fella's intro.
Maureen
I'm laughing my head off over this because that's exactly what my chickens do. They NEVER share! Runaway with the tomato is a favourite game! Have you tried the gruesome "Toss Them A Worm" game? Not a pretty sight for the worm!

OMG you are so funny. I mean your chickens are so funny...I am taking care of my neighbor's chickens for a few days and am SO doing that tomorrow!
KiwiKat
So hilarious watching chickens run! Love it!
Brook
Totally! Their feathery little chicken pantaloons just crack me up.
Therese
Our chickens played this game once with a humungous, fat, revolting grub as big as my thumb which Nutmeg (god rest her soul) found in the garden. Very entertaining!Poor Nutmeg didn't get it in the end anyway - queen Selma got it, naturally.
Keri
After taking Mum in for emergency surgery (she's going to be okay) I really needed a laugh. Thanks so much!
Lindsay
Ok, I officially love your chickens a completely ridiculous amount. Who knew I could think chickens were cute?
Amanda
I'm a huge fan of dominoes, myself.
Chess & cribbage are two things I refuse to learn in life. But I learned to play dominoes from an aunt at a big family hoo-rah a few years ago, and I'm hooked.
I used to have chickens just like yours too, and they ate lots of year-end tomatoes. :)
Cassie
Can you really call it an official episode without the "Will they EAT IT?" intro? I think not :)
Karen
Cassie - I'm gonna be honest with you. I really debated about that. But since this is a "special episode", I thought it would be O.K. ~ karen!
Cassie
Just wanted you to know that people notice what you do. I like that part of it because you don't seem so removed. But, I think as a "special episode" it can be special in more ways than one :)
Sherry (BTLover2)
I have to chime in. I was soooo waiting for the "Will they eat it?" intro... I even thought, "Oh, Sherry, just wait. It'll be at the end" but nope. I love that intro.
BTW, Karen, you play a mean banjo! Weird but I envisioned you playing chess with your feet while kicking ass on the banjo (and maybe having a strap-on harmonica too). What's wrong with me?
Laura
Great use for your bumper tomato crop!!
