I've owned backyard chickens for 5 months now. Last week I finally got an egg. "An" being the operative word. Eggs aren't exactly flying out of their asses at this point.
Good thing eggs aren't the only thing chickens are good for.
They're also excellent dancers and inherently helpful. The chicken dance with real chickens.

Fantastic.... I was curious what kind of chickens you recommend as egg laying pets? I have two little girls and would like them to not be damaged due to "squirrilely chicken-rage!" my mother has told me horror stories about growing up on a farm in drummensville with chickens that scratched their legs.... She has the tendency to over-exaggerate often, but I don't know. When I was little she blamed the spider veins on her legs on the chickens of her past. Now in my late twenties I am onto her and the web of chicken lies she weaves. Please advise.
Hi Brie - It depends on where you live on what type of chicken you get. The various breeds are meant for certain areas. Rhode Island Reds are friendlyish and cold tolerant and lay the most eggs of any breed, along with Leghorns. Cochins are very docile and loveable, but don't lay as many eggs. 2 or 3 a week compared to 6 from the Rhode Island Reds. Search the Internet and sites like backyardchickens.com to find out about the different breeds and their weather preferences as well as how friendly they are and how many eggs they lay. Phew. Lots to consider. ~ karen
Bah ha ha ha ... i have to go change my underwear now! I can't wait to get my chickens! Did you know that chicken poop is wonderful for composting! It adds a lot of nutrients and helps the compost heat up so it can decompose faster! Another awesome use for chickens.
Brownie Scout's honor, Karen, that story is true. I now have a long, dangling stitch at the corner of my right eye that popped when I had fits over the chick vid. I contend that final stitch was too damn tight anyway. Hope the doc asks me about it; I'll tell her it's your fault and show her the chicken dance vid on my iPhone.
