I opened up my front door to check the mail on Tuesday and I was smacked in the face by the distinct scent of spring. It was exactly like a worm had crawled up each of my nostrils. You know that worm smell? It was right up there in my nose. Which can only mean one thing … bring on the spring!
SUCK ON THAT WINTER. You can go take a hike up a hill. (my apologies for the strong language)
The truth is we didn't really have a winter around here. I only shovelled once or twice and most of this winter the temperature has been above freezing.
So we are almost officially into a new season.
According to blogs a new season means NEW ACCESSORIES FOR THE HOUSE!! YAAAAYYYYYY. O.K., I’m not exactly that enthused about it, but I thought it would add a greater sense of excitement to the post.
Also, I no longer have seasonal accessories. I have space. So I don't really have anything spring/seasonal to put out unless you count the fake forsythia branches I put out every February.
The problem is, Easter is then next logical holiday to decorate for after Christmas in the world of seasonal, holiday decor, but I don't much like Easter stuff. I haven’t been able to eat ham since dissecting a fetal pig in biology class and the traditional colours of Easter only make sense to me if I'm seeing them in a sherbert cup.
If you are a GO Easter! kind of person I don't get you, but I respect you.
But don’t fret! (I know you aren’t fretting … but again … for the purpose of making this post more dramatic I added it in there)
Decorating for Easter doesn’t have to be ugly or pastel or anything you don't want it to be. It can be as simple as a basket of grass on the table.
This weekend I'll be starting my annual Easter custom of growing grass.
I started doing this years ago. It makes me feel like I'm at least doing *something* for Easter and yet really it just makes the house feel like spring.
You too still have time to grow grass if you want to do it too. You can grow grass like the photo above in 5 days.
Yep. Just 5 days. Plus you can grow it in almost about anything you want.
THIS year I'm going to try growing my easter grass in a row of mismatched antique tea cups. Like these.
Except not like these at all, because I'm going to try it in fancy antique tea cups. I just couldn't be bothered to take a photo of the antique tea cups I'm going to use. Instead I found this marginally relevant photo of me several years ago at an antique show.
Join along with me if you want! We can grow grass in cups together.
It's more fun than I made it sound.
If you need a refresher or haven't read my post on how to grow real Easter grass in baskets then read it and go find yourself some tea cups.
We'll meet back here in a week or so and compare.
Have a good weekend.

i would like clover more than grass. including my entire lawn.
Marcia
Looking forward to seeing the tiny lawnmower.

I like your Easter decorating best of all. Speaking as a person of Betty's generation, the only holiday families decorated for was Christmas. Advertising has shoved seasonal decorating down our throats, adding yet more tasks to our busy schedules. (...and we won't even go into $$$.) My decorating for Easter and Spring is to open a window to fresh air--when the temperature of that day is being kind.

Who knew grass could look so charming? I'll join you. But I'll probably add a few pastel-coloured eggs to my little patch of grass to delight the grandkids. :)

Ooh, I'm in. If only to kick start my seed starting. Which I have not started yet. Bought a new tray and soil and half a dozen packs of seeds about a week and a half ago and have done nothing since. I have car grass I can grow. And if I'm mistaken, I have chia seeds and can grow my neglected Chia Pet™.
Laura Bee
CAT grass! Lol that reminds me of that woman who covered her car in chia seeds.... Crazy fun.

I will certainly join with you - if only to surprise my SIL that thinks the only thing worth growing is grass and I think it is wasteful use of time, money, and environment. I want the pleasure of smelling grass and will have a plate full on my table to snip and sniff whenever I'm anxious, sad, lonely, depressed, broke. Grass can work miracles if I just believe.

Allergies have been hitting for a while now, so, yes, Spring has sprung! But they're calling for all-day snow and high of zero on official Spring day. Easter approaching also means trying to find a decent turkey for Easter dinner instead of what I'd call a "big chicken." I'd do a ham, but have never figured out how to do a ham. I was lucky: dropped biology just before they moved on to cutting up things that can move. As for St. Pat's day tomorrow, no sane person in town would go out, what with kids coming from out of town to join one of the biggest street parties. Police has been gearing up for their biggest challenge of the year.

Sounds like KW, where I live, avoid Watreloo on Sunday at all costs! As for ham, I buy a Scnieders half ham and boil it for an hour and tada! But I also do turkey, carrots, potatoes etc.
Jane
My husband and younger son were out briefly yesterday mid- afternoon and they said that the party had already started. They encountered 3 girls each with a beer giggling while crossing the street. They obviously had already had a few. And there was some driver obviously driving intoxicated. And there were police presence everywhere.

Karen......It is indeed time to start growing "grass"!
Wink wink 😋😉😉
Happy St.Pats Day 🍀🍀
Nancy
Thank you Karen. Antique grass cups coming up. Have a great weekend all.

“Couldn’t be bothered “, ha, ha, ha, snort.
I love the look of the Easter grass but, say it with me, I can’t be bothered, too busy with seed starting, fun!
Keep on these morning chuckles, please. No real winter here in Sarnia either. Sell the snowblower?
Karen
I already sold mine a couple of years ago. Might get a snow thrower though. Just in case. ~ karen!

I know after Christmas you think Easter - but St Patrick's day is tomorrow and out house is decorated - Easter can wait until Monday
Karen
LOL. I bet your house is decorated! Lip's friend Sterling has been wearing a St. Patrick's Day bandana for over a week now so I get my St. Patricks decorations through that on our daily walks. ~ karen!

Ok, so I read the post on growing wheat or rye and I wondered...I have a lot of bird seed mix, could I grow that? Easter is important to me as a holiday but I've never used the usual decorations, not even when my kids were little (they got their baskets, of course). I love the idea of such an elegant reminder of new life and renewal. And I have a nice collection of China cups and saucers to use. Great idea, as always.
Karen
Hi Nina! Bird seed mix would work, but it wouldn't look as neat because everything would be sprouting at different times and have different leaves. That doesn't mean it won't look good, it just probably won't look as uniform. It'd be a bit wilder looking. ~ karen!
Nina
I didn't think of that. I have some rye so I'll try both. Thanks, and happy Easter!

To me Easter has always meant ONE near vital important thing........... marshmallow Peeps shaped like bunnies in the traditional colors of rabbits, namely yellow and blue. And I'm one of 'those' Peepaholics who likes them after they've been air aged for at least a day to get a bit firmer. Yep, you can have yer chocolate hollow hares, pass me the Peeps please.
Kay
They make funny smores too. 😉
Mike
The photo of you in this photo is a head-turner (choosing this phrase lend physicality to this post). And it shows what nice cups you have (as backups for growing grass).

First comment. Lol. Off to refresh my memory on this.
