Alphaville

Thirty-two years is a very long time to be in a band, even if you have a long list of singles, albums and success along the way. It doesn’t seem to be a problem for the German dream pop veterans, Alphaville, whom people know them for their debut smash hit, “Big in Japan”, which took the charts by storm in 1984. They take to the stage as the houselights go down and the blue lights go up. Their entrancing synthesizers and vocoders make you feel as though you are floating through space, and a very colourful space at that. It is no secret that Alphaville know exactly what they are doing as they play through their synth laden classics, “Red Rose”, “Romeos”, “Fools” and of course their hit, “Forever Young”, which resurfaced in the charts five years ago when indie pop band Youth Group reprised and recorded it, only for it to go on to feature as a recurring love theme for the characters, Ryan and Marissa in season three on the TV drama series The O.C. It doesn’t end there though, as it was featured in the 1989 movie, Listen to Me, and a high school prom-related scene in the 2004 film, Napoleon Dynamite. There is a moment of transcendence as they sing this nostalgic classic. It is the peak of the set when the old fans and the new fans join together to sing in breathtaking harmony, followed by a loud cheer from the audience. It is no surprise from the audience’ reaction as to why this band are still doing what they do best.

Anglo-German new-wave band Alphaville rode the wave of invested interest within the genre during the 80s yet impressively as many others careers began to fizzle out, they demonstrated substantial staying power. Now thirty years since the formation and they continue to tour globally with the classic material including 'Jet Set' along with the new tracks from 'Catching Rays on Giant'.

It remains an upbeat operation focusing around vocalist Marian Gold who remains to be the only founding member. She is accompanied by well selected and highly trained musicians who know the discography well and you would be fooled in thinking they had toured together from the offset as their rapport is just so good. The audience continues to bellow along the chorus to 'Forever Young' especially now that is has had a remix by Jay Z in recent years. 'Apollo' and 'Anyway' close the show in suitably retro manner and prove there is still a place in the modern market for 80s new-wave.

Was at their concert in Copenhagen 23 october. Best night the past 30 years(best was my weddingnight). I stood in at the stage all trough concert, and can they perform? Oh yes, they all delivered the show, sadly i think the music was a bit too high, it killed Marian Golds voice, maybe because i stood right next to the loudspeakers. But also right next to David P Goodes, he plays the guitars like an angle. Only one wish.....that they would come back to Denmak once again, but this time in Jutland. Also i would like a meet and greet, so we could get authographs.

I saw Alphaville in Gothenburg on the 2nd October. The concert was fantastic, Marian Gold really delivers, I managed to be at the very front, with an awesome view of the band's performance. They played all the old favourites, the atmosphere was amazing, the band engaged wonderfully with the audience. All Alphaville fans need to see them live, the quality of the music is superb!

Great show. Marion Gold puts on a wonderful performance. He can still sing! What a great voice and fun time. Had a chance to do the meet and greet. He and his band were very gracious and pleasant to speak to. Very humble. Had front row seats and the interaction with him and the band made it for a memorable night. Hope to see them again.

Even though they are not "forever young" anymore, the second part of the show was superb!
The guys sung their best hits and got the Crowd dancing and happy.
Songs like "sound like a melody", "forever young" "big in Japan" will live forever.

In my opinion the concert was great but the place wasn't appropriate for that kind of venue. It's a shame when You go to watch your favorite bands in concert and the sound is not the best allied.
