MATOMA (born 29 May, 1991) is the stage name of Norwegian tropical house DJ and producer Tom Stræte Lagergren, who enjoyed his greatest success to date with his remix of The Notorious B.I.G. single âOld Thing Backâ in 2014, hailing from Flisa, à snes, Norway.
Born and raised in Flisa, Norway, Lagergrenâs earliest musical excursion came playing the piano as a child. After years of honing his skills, the musician began entering piano contests, which subsequently resulted in Lagergren performing alongside respected Norwegian pianists, HÃ¥vard Gimse and Leif Ove Andsnes. As the years marched on, Lagergrenâs interest in classical piano started to dwindle and he looked for ways to expand his musical interest using electronics. During his time studying at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, the musician began mixing on his computer, where he soon found himself endeared to the music of tropical house.
After graduating from university, Lagergren released his debut remix of The Notorious B.I.G.âs âOld Thing Backâ, which took large parts of Norway and the online house world by storm. The track rose to the top-spot on Hypemachineâs most-listened chart and even peaked at No. 2 on the official Norwegian singles chart. The record catapulted Lagergren to international recognition which the producer maintained by releasing a string of remixes including Enrique Iglesiasâ âBailandoâ, Astridâs â2amâ, and tracks by Imagine Dragons, Tegan & Sara, and Truls. Marked by Lagergrenâs dynamic grooves, tropical percussion, and all-round summer vibe, the producer has become a highly sought-after club and festival DJ, playing shows in Norway, Sweden, Denmark, France and Canada.
Read moreNot sure what this other reviewer was talking about (aside from he must have been rolling supppppperrrr hard to think Matoma was good). It was a very marginal show in my opinion. I have been to lots of EDM shows and this was not that great (and i was really excited for it too). I just don't feel like i got much more out of seeing him live as opposed to recordings. He didn't do anything out of the blue aside from play his tracks on soundcloud. And it gets annoying after the only thing he says to the audience over and over is "(insert city name) are you ready to get fucked up?!?!" - he literally said that at least 5-6x during the show. Stick to listening to him on cd.
Blew away my already high expectations. Matoma is known for his chill tropical-house happy vibes, but he gave an incredible set with just the right amount of hype songs, mixing trap and pop with his signature tropical sound. Echostage was a great venue as well, with great lasers during Matoma's set and excellent sound. If dancing really close together with other people isn't your thing, you can still hear the music perfectly when you're not on the main dancefloor. Loved this show!
Decent track play list. Tough to get into vibe. Tracks plays maybe 30 seconds each. Dancing was minimal due to mixing genres like rap with house or techno. When avoiding the idea of dancing it sounding like the set was for a battle or driving not so much to dance. Only an opinion from west coast new to mid west scene.
Amazing!!! Bkaye and Elephante were both great, but Matoma stole the show. The lasers in particular were incredible... I donât think Iâve seen lasers like that at Concord in the past. Well done. Of course the music was amazing, and Concord is by far the best concert venue in Chicago. Great time!
What a wonderful show. Matoma had to be one of the friendliest artists that I've ever seen. He was the host of the party, catering to all of his guests. There is a lot of depth and reason to the way he interprets music. It gives so much more to the listeners.
Matoma was amazing! Deserves a set at Ultra. Really knows how to get a crowd going and keep it going. Would go to see him again 10/10 times and would highly recommend him to my friends. Can't wait for him to come back to the DC area.
Very nice show. Beautifull visuals and good crowdcontrol. Jay prior was a bit short playing. The show was sold out, but is not to crowdy. Unfortunately there was a quiet moment between the show of jay prior and Matoma.
Matoma never showed up. Although this was disappointing, the music was good, though if we went for tropical house, it would have been nice to hear tropical house.
The DJs were talented and drops were good.
Great show, Coda is an intimate venue with a great sound system. Matoma had some solid opening DJs and killed a ~1.5 hour set last night in Philly. Would definitely check him out again.
THIS CONCERT WAS SO MUCH FUN!! I woke up the next morning and thought it was a dream. It was just a dream come true. 100% would go back to the Ogden theatre and to Matoma!!!
