Biography

  • Ben Harper is a singer/songwriter hailing from California, U.S.A who was born on October 28th, 1969. While he most often works with the band Relentless7 today, he named his first full-time backing band The Innocent Criminals in 1997, and toured with them until 2008 before reuniting them in 2015.

Born in Pomona, California, United States, Ben Harper picked up the guitar at a very early age thanks to his grandparents, who ran a music store called The Folk Music Centre and Museum. However, it wasn't until taking in a Bob Marley concert in 1978 that the nine year old Harper decided that he wanted to be a musician, and played his first concert three years later at the age of 12. At around the same time, Harper discovered the works of Robert Johnson and was greatly inspired by his slide playing, and became so skilled that he was tapped by veteran blues singer Taj Mahal to tour and record with him.

After spending the late 80's performing with a long list of legendary blues singers, Harper debuted as a solo artist in 1992 with his album “Pleasure and Pain”. His breakthrough came in 1995 with the Gold-certified “Fight For Your Mind”, and 1997's follow-up “The Will To Live” saw the introduction of The Innocent Criminals, Harper's backing band. For the rest of the decade, the band backed Harper as he broke through into rock's mainstream, touring with the likes of Dave Matthews while headlining his own worldwide tours as well. Harper continued to release material in the 21st century, sometimes with other artists but always coming back to The Innocent Criminals until 2009, when he released “White Lies And Dark Times” with a new band called Relentless7.

Harper spent the next six years touring and recording with Relentless7, until news broke in early 2015 that Harper was bringing the Criminals back for an extensive world tour that summer. With over a decade and a half's experience under their belt already, playing the songs that made Harper into the world-renowned musician that he is today, these shows will be utterly unmissable. For that, Ben Harper and The Innocent Criminals come highly recommended.

Live reviews

  • Ben Harper is an unbelievable talent. After being introduced to his album ‘Diamonds on The inside’, I could no longer doubt his talent as a songwriter. An incredible album and the one that first made me a fan. He is one of the few artists that seems to be able to cross genres and combine numerous styles of music. It’s just impossible to pigeon hold his music! It seems he has been influenced by folk, rock, soul, gospel, indigenous and blues in his life and has experimented with all of them though out the course of his career. He's also a cracking performer! I know i’m not the only one who thinks so, as he managed to win a Grammy for one of his live performances! I was luckily enough to see him at a venue in Birmingham, UK. A small venue place with a save the world theme. Only fitting for an artist who is well know for his activism. They played a massive set! They must have been on the stage for over 2 hours, quite incredible! The Innocent Criminals were on top form! Together they played most of the tracks I knew, such as, ‘She’s Only Happy In The Sun’, Bring The Funk’, ‘With My Now Two hands’ and ‘Excuse Me Mr’. They also went into some top class instrumentals! Boy, can that man play lap slide guitar! Amazing Stuff!

  • Three time Grammy award winner Ben Harper has been touring with his loyal band The Innocent Criminals since the late 90s and although his own namesake is far more famous, you cannot deny that the group enhances Ben's performance style. The blues/rock and soul singer has been active on the circuit since the early 90s and this experience feeds directly into his persona onstage. He definitely inherits the laid back sensibilities of blues and rock and it feels continuously authentic as he moves through his discography over the space of the evening.

The musicians have a totally ace rapport onstage and clearly enjoy playing together which is one advantage to creating a band as opposed to performing with session musicians. They know how to react to each others instruments expertly as they have been working together for so many years and know the music inside out. The likes of 'Gold To Me' have been developed and given new instrumental structures whilst 'Diamonds on the Inside' is as moody as ever. It is a brilliant night of blues celebrating Ben Harper and his band, with a great turn out and a highly praised performance the group has many years left on the circuit.

  • Meeting the drummer and singer of the Jack Moves outside the venue. Real nice and laid back guys...

After seeing the Berlin show, I knew it would be a special one, first time in Prague.

A bit dissapointed it was by far not sold out. The energy given by the band still was amazing...

Ben Harper stood in front of stage, without microphones, his voice filling up the room... amazing... how he can make the crowd feel at one...

Prague people, it's not a crime to be tall, respect tall people at concerts as well. I know I'm tall, but I will not scare me away with kicking and punching and calling me names... I'm happy I will see Ben Harper again in Amsterdam, the paradiso church, where Dutch don't treat tall as bad people...

I'm shocked about narrow minded Eastern European mentality... so not Ben Harper...

Criminals! You are guilty of a perfect show! Great musician, enjoying a half filled venue with joy, laughter, and top music...

In spite of the crowd, still I enjoyed Ben and his innocents very much

  • I have probably seen Ben Harper 10 times over the past 15 years in a variety cities (Auckland, Amsterdam, Strasbourg, Koln, Melbourne and now Perth) and he never disappoints. Another fantastic show (2.5 hours). Great song writer, wonderful musician and amazingly talented band ... what more could you ask for ... oh that's right, awesome location.

Special 'shout out' to The Pierce Brothers - you guys are bloody amaze-balls and I look forward to seeing a lot more of you in the future.

It was pouring rain almost the entire concert, yet they played an encore and the crowd didn't budge until the show was over.

  • I saw this show at MECU pavilion on Pier 6 in downtown Baltimore. It was a very intimate and heartfelt performance by Ben and his band. The quality of his live by performance and on-stage presence exceeded my expectations. The show made me a bigger fan than I was previously, and I recommend going to see him if you haven't.

  • The concert was really good. 2h20 long! Seems like the band liked the place and the public a lot and gave all they had. A good 20min with lights on as Ben didn't want to leave. We sang happy birthday to him too.

  • Amazing performance. Ben Harper is our new Jimi. Love his lyrics and soul! The Fillmore in Philly is an incredible venue with tons of bars and a DJ. The after-show dance party was so much fun. Ben rocks !

  • It was just amazing.

One of the best moments of the concert was when Ben Harper sang without micro and all the crowd in Brixton academy stayed in silence.

I hope to see them soon!
