Biography

  • Ty Dolla $ign was born Tyrone Griffin on the 13th of April 1985. Performing and recording since 2007, the Los Angeles, USA native gained a reputation for being alternative R&B’s chief hedonist, alongside being one of the genres most in demand producers and collaborators.

I can’t be the only person in the world to look at the stage name of one of modern R&B’s premier lotharios and find myself only able to think of Glee’s Principle Figgins referring to Ke$ha as “Ke-dollar-sign-ha”, right?

It might stick out like a sore thumb but like the Foo Fighters before him, having an absurd stage name has only made the fact that Tyrone Griffin has risen above it and can be taken seriously for his talent and skill all the more impressive. Needless to say, it’s some serious talent and skill.

Beginning his musical career as a bassist in 2007, Griffin tried his hand at rapping in a number of groups and solo project but first came to true prominence as a producer. Most notably, he co-wrote and produced YG’s debut single “Toot It And Boot It” in 2010, his first taste at Billboard chart success.

After some solo releases he signed a major label contract with Atlantic Records in 2012, followed by another contract with Taylor Gang Records the following year. Since then he has gone from strength to strength, collaborating with everyone from new blood The Weeknd, established stars like label boss Wiz Khalifa, all the way up to bona fide legends like Rihanna.

To cap it off, this level of success has come without even a debut album to his name. His E.P’s, collaborations and mixtapes have made him the kind of name that most artists would kill to be, and even then, he’s got his best days far ahead of him. One to watch for sure.

  • Ty Dolla Sign was just jiggy! His style of music and catchy song lyrics truly maade my night. Before leaving home, I was already prepared for a awesome night of smooth music and good vibes. He reminds me of some of my favorite artists like Dom Kennedy, Wiz Khalifa and Kendrick Lamar. The music is just L.A. style and og. I like especially like that he keeps it real. He doesn't sing about fantasies and things that I can't relate to. He actually has a pretty keen insight on female nature and characteristics. My favorite song, "Lord Knows" is a fly song in itself. Just the beat and the style of Ty$ and Dom together makes for the perfect groove. I think Ty$ is the kind of artist that already keeps it so real and true to his culture and himself that his music can be experienced in the same way among any group of people whose experienced the same things. Like life in the streets, the club or at home. Females can relate from businesswomen to strippers. We all can appreciate a man who pays attention to us and the way we carry ourselves. Whether good or bad, it's still nice to hear what men think about us. Overall, the concert was dope and I can't wait to hear more of his music and see more of his style. He's dope and will go really, really far. Keep supplying that dope music.

  • There is no doubt that Ty Dolla $ign, real name Tyrone Griffin is one of the most intimidating performers in hip hop. The guy commands the whole stage from the moment he steps out with his huge stature, huge dreads and huge shades. The crowd does not quite know if to cheer or wait for further command as the rapper does not particularly show them much affection on appearance, instead jeering them with 'is that the best you got?'. This of course evokes even louder roars and only when the man himself deems this to be a suitable level of noise he allows his DJ to cue the bass rumblings of opener 'Lord Knows'.

He moves between rap and more of an R & B style throughout the night showing his vocal range well whilst he plays his debut EP 'Beach House 2' in full much to the delight of crowds. The earlier mix tape material goes over well with the underground fans but it is the finale of 'Or Nah' that really unifies the room and keeps everybody jumping to the very last verse.

  • Doors opened at 7:30-7:45pm, not 7pm as advertised. Opening acts started performing around 8:30. Ty didn't start performing until about 11:35pm. He was great and had great surprised guests: Jermih, Jermaine Dupri, Lil' Scrappy, T.I., Migos, Future, and Young Thug. My only issue is that he came on so late and by the time he came on my feet were hurting from the long standing and I was ready to go home. I left around 12pm and he was still on stage.

I suggest they either advertise correctly, and that he comes on stage earlier because the lag time was ridiculous and because of that I wouldn't go to any more of his concerts unless there are seats. It's absurd to wait that long for an artist. When they are at bigger venues and are bigger named artists this doesn't happen, so I believe he should hold himself to these standards, as well as respect his fans time and energy coming to see him. I saw more surprise guest then him actually performing.

  • Absolutely incredible although I was worried and at first there was such a small crowd, but as the night went on it soon was a packed house.

Everyone gave their all, high energy throughout the entire night including the audience when one young woman decided she was going to help put on her own personal performance and jumped on the stage a number of times with Keita Juma, but what I was most impressed with is how well he handled it and at no point seemed annoyed or upset by it and went on with the show all the while smiling and rapping! The highlight of the night was Ty Dolla Sign's stellar performance!! Never missed a beat and gave everything he always does to his fans and especially his die hard followers. As per the venue it was also totally awesome, staff where friendly and helpful and the whole night was one I will remember for a long time.

  • Ty Dolla Sign is an intimidating force of hip-hop his huge stage presence complete with huge dreadlocks and his huge sunglasses. He has a good R&B voice singing in tune with no effect on his voice. Every other word that he says seems to be a curse word but this audience doesn’t care. The bars are lined, the patron and Grey Goose is flowing, with this horde getting gradually inebriated. One of the things he is fantastic at is engaging this audience in singing along with every single song. One of the only things that I would say is that they should’ve mixed the sound a little better. There are points when I genuinely can’t tell if he is singing or rapping. “Familiar” is quite a highlight of this set, with punters getting involved, dancing and jumping up and down fanning their arms from front to back with the beat.

  • With the threat of a dangerous nor'easter on the horizon I was worried I would not be able to go see Ty Dolla $ign. Luckily the storm held off and I am really happy I went to the Don't Judge Me Tour at Irving plaza. Ty didn't hit the stage until 11PM but the opening acts were great. The roof came off the place when he hit the stage. Performed many songs from Beach House 3 as well as his other hits. Very humble guy who is very passionate about what he does. If you want to have fun, go dumb, and get stupid go see a ty Dolla $ign show. Hopefully he plays venues like Irving Plaza for years to come. The whole vibe was rad.

  • He didn't show up, so neither did a lot of people. We didn't even get notice that he wasn't gonna show til we got to the venue. They could've at least gave advance notice.
