Nero are a dubstep trio hailing from London, England who formed in 2004. After making their debut in 2011, they became one of the most succesful dubstep artists around, hitting number one on the UK Album Charts with their first record âWelcome Realityâ.
The trio is composed of producers Daniel Stephens and Joe Ray, who formed the group back in 2004, and singer Alana Watson, who joined them after featuring on some of their early songs in 2008. Ray and Stephens met when they were 17 years old, at the specialist music school in Pimlico that they both attended. Both of them were pretty much musical prodigies, Ray playing classical guitar and Stephens the cello, but both of them composed electronic music on their laptops in their own time. By the age of 17 they had decided to create music together, setting up their studio in Stephensâ bedroom, and a year later, the duo met their future bandmate Watson.
By 2004, the band had signed to Formation Records and over the course of the next four years, they released a critically acclaimed series of 12 inches that started out as straight drum ânâ bass but over time developed into their signature sound of pop-inflected dubstep. Watson guested on a couple of their 2008 releases, most notably their first attempt at straight dubstep âThis Wayâ, released on the Audio Freaks label. By the end of the year was a fully-fledged member of the group, however, it was 2009 that saw them truly gain momentum.
Their single âAct Like You Knowâ started getting some genuine radio play, and their remix of The Streetsâ âBlinded By The Lightâ was played in high profile sets by everyone from Skream to Diplo. Late 2010 saw the band listed on the BBCâs Sound Of 2011 list, one of the most on-point choices the list has ever made, as it turned out. Their debut album âWelcome Realityâ, released in the same year, hit number one with a bullet in the U.K and reached the top ten of the US Dance albums chart and ever since then theyâve been one of the biggest names in EDM.
Theyâve won a Grammy for a collaboration with Skillex and worked with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra to bring the world âThe Dubstep Symphonyâ, and have built up a reputation as one of the best live acts in electronic music. The best part is that theyâre just getting started, and in their prime, theyâll be practically unbeatable. Highly recommended.
Read moreNero exploded onto the electronic scene back in 2010; although theyâd officially formed as long ago as 2004, they timed their entry perfectly, arriving at right around the time that dubstep was genuinely crossing over into the mainstream consciousness. Their appearance on the BBCâS Sound of 2011 list served as a precursor to a string of radio hits; first âMe & Youâ, in at fifteen on the UK singles chart, âGuiltâ, which went one better at eight, and then their first number one, âPromisesâ, in August of that year; it managed the impressive feat of making the corresponding position in the States, too. A sell-out headline tour of the UK would follow, and saw the London trio reinterpret their debut record, Welcome Reality, for the live stage. With beatmakers Daniel Stephens and Joe Ray perched atop a wall of speakers and screens - like their own take of Daft Punkâs pyramid - vocalist Alana Watson stalked the front of the stage, delivering stirring vocal turns on all of the groupâs hits to date, as well as delivering covers as diverse as Friendly Fires and Sub Focus. Elsewhere, they genuinely pushed the envelope by delivering a âdubstep symphonyâ with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra; theyâre now busying themselves with work on their second record, so expect a slew of new dates to follow once itâs ready.
British electronic supergroup Nero have been blowing up the dubstep scene since their 2011 debut 'Welcome Reality' hit number 1 in the UK album charts. Their star has only risen since then, with gold-selling single 'Promises' and their collaboration with Skrillex on its remix, which earned both artists a Grammy award.
The mixmasters of the band are Londoners Daniel Stephens and Joe Ray. Their style of ground-shaking bass and futuristic dubstep scream-beats is on many tracks accompanied by their female vocalist Alanya (who joins them live when she can), and made their live set a no-holds-barred arm-waving dancefest from start to finish. When I saw them a couple of years ago at the staggeringly pretty venue, the Roseland Ballroom in New York, their set was completely incredible, a pure, epic party for an hour and a half.
The quality of their sound production and the acoustics of the room culminated in one of the dirtiest, ear-throbbingly awesome dubstep sets I've ever seen. The crowd was loving every minute as well, and their cool stage setup on a wall of speakers, and stellar light show combining both lasers and unrelenting strobes further added to the electrifyingly euphoric atmosphere of the show.
Electro/dance outfit Nero were thrust into the limelight with their cinematic dub step which really stood out from the monotonous market and the debut 'Welcome Reality' shot straight to the top of the UK charts in 2011. It also gained the band international recognition when the album appeared on numerous European charts and first single 'Promises' was awarded a Grammy award.
The variety of audience at the gig is a credit to the universal appeal of Nero's music. There are lovers of dub step and dance alongside the more pop orientated crowds yet they cheer in unison as the DJs appear behind the decks and the massive platform illuminates. It is quite a strange setup as the performers are elevated high above the crowd and vocalist Alana Watson stands above the crowd and proudly sings out hits such as 'Crush On You'.
'Guilt' receives massive cheers as the crowd dance beneath the strobes light in the heady atmosphere. 'Promises' is a huge moment as the audience clap below whilst Alana gives her all to this momentous track. An extended remix keeps the audience dancing as long as possible.
Nero was excellent! Great visuals, performance, live presence. What an amazing live act, it's exciting to watch them evolve as a group. One of my favorites of the moment. Good, positive crowd- Nero attracts dedicated, friendly fans.
One few gripe, I was not a fan of Chris Lake, the second opener. I don't feel like he tonally fit with the headliner and his set was WAY too long. I missed the first opener.
Overall a great experience! The Warfield in SF is a solid venue, nice size and good vibe. Drinks could be a little more affordable though, especially for a 5+ hour show.
NERO will never fail to disappoint music wise----they are masters.

Nero was the bomb.com and Alana Watson has mad stage presence on top of an amazing voice. Go see Nero when roll into your city, you won't be disappointed! The crowd was awesome and the venue was intimate, which made for an even better time!
Phenomenal show...Chris Lake was a stellar opener, and NERO played a good variety of new songs and remixes of old hits. Stage display was super cool, although a little heavy on the strobe effects. And Alana was a fantastic live performer.
It's hard not to be disappointed when less than half the band shows up. Big let down considering we had been looking forward to seeing this band all summer. Please include that information when advertising the show.
Such a good show! Danced until I couldn't stand up anymore. Played all of my favorite tracks and even some that I hadn't heard yet. No complaints at all, a great experience and would definitely see them again.
Expected both DJs got one. Not enough doomsday dubstep. Trash crowd. Temple is cool. Good to see some throwback songs. Will continue going to free shows. Why must a review be at least 30 words long?
