Biography

  • Wolf Alice (formed in 2010) is a British four-piece alternative rock, indie-rock and pop band, hailing from North London, in the UK.

Deriving their name from a short story by Angela Carter, Wolf Alice was formed in 2010 by Ellie Roswell and Jeff Oddie. Shortly after, the band released an eponymously-titled EP featuring the tracks “Every Cloud”, “Destroy Me” and “Wednesday”, the latter of which was also made into a video. After two years of playing local shows and getting their name into the blogosphere, Wolf Alice became a four-piece with the addition of drummer Joel Amey and bassist Theo Ellis.

The band subsequently released the single “Leaving You” as a free download on their Soundcloud page which resulted in BBC Radio 1 airplay and a feature in NME’s ‘Radar’ section, significantly increasing the exposure of the group. After the release of the single Wolf Alice toured with Birmingham, UK band Peace and recorded a session for BBC Radio 1 DJ Huw Stevens in January 2013.

Wolf Alice signed with independent label Chess Club records in early 2013 who issued the band’s first physically released single “Fluffy” in February 2013. This was followed the by singles “Bros” and the EP “Blush” in October 2013. By December, BBC Radio 6 named the band as the single most blogged-about band in 2013 and a little while later signed with Dirty Hit Records. The new label released Wolf Alice’s second official EP “Creature Songs” on a 10” vinyl and digitally in May, which the the band supported by opening for a catalogue of UK indie bands including Alt-J, Superfood and The 1975.

Live reviews

  • As I’ve heard from the grapevine and expected now that I saw them “live” in Miami Ellie Rowsell or “Alice” has [that] voice... she makes you want to listen to the next line the next verse, chorus, rhyme, her voice is that angelic!! As for the rest of the mates in Wolf Alice they are very energetic and sound together like a perfect fit. Their melodies are unique and spectacular and their range is spectacular!!! Would I see them again ABSOLUTELY YES!! However never again as an opening act!!!! I paid 170$+ to hear this magnificent band for 45minutes... they looked like they were rushed off the stage at 8:15pm I was completely shocked and upset. Then somebody from LIVE NATION, after I rushed the stage to ask, said opening acts only get 45min. Honest to god that should be disclosed on the tix, for below average concert goers like me, if I knew this I would never have paid that much to be robbed from seeing Wolf Alice... as for the performance It was awesomeness!!!

It’s very rare for me to adore every song on an artists album literally... I can only count on one hand where this is true, Wolf Alice is one of those unique bands for me. Another band where this has happened is “The Sundays”

Another English band from the UK. Wolf Alice Ellie Rowsell please keep on keeping on!!!!!

  • Fronted by Ellie Roswell, London-based four-piece Wolf Alice have been touted as the best new guitar band around. Living up to that hype can't be easy but they are making it seem simple with brilliant sets like their show at Nottingham's Dot To Dot festival earlier this year. Playing to nearly a thousand people at Rock City, they rattle through fan favourites 'Fluffy' and 'She', sounding far heavier and brit pop-pier than on record. Ellie, wearing a pink dress and sporting DM's is a poster girl for the indie kids. New track 'Moaning Lisa Smile' arrives with anger and energy with Ellie screamimg "ahh ahh ahhh". With the prospect of a debut album hopefully being released sooner rather than later, they will soon be performing on the bigger festival stages and larger capacity live venues. They're already making their way up the festival ladder having performed at this year's Glastonbury festival. They're also set to play to an expectedly large crowd at Reading and Leeds festival. After that, they're embarking on a mini UK tour with promises of lots of new material. Wolf Alice really are the next big thing, catch them up close, playing intimate gigs while you can!

  • Fantastic show by North London indie rock stars Wolf Alice. Though I know their two full albums by heart, they played a lot of songs I haven't heard from earlier in their careers, which made me want to dig back in their earlier catalog.

The crowd was of course really into the show, and Ellie Rowsell was great, both winsome and fierce, she has such a powerful range and really great stage presence despite being notoriously shy and awkward offstage.

I have to say that the opening acts were quite a contrast. The first group, Nova Twins, were pretty engaging, like a female RHCP funky rock duo, but the second band Surfbort was one of the worst bands I've seen in a long while, the lead singer was drunk and babbling and totally amateur, can't fathom why Wolf Alice would let them tour together - there are a million more worthy bands out there!

Anyway, Wolf Alice are my favorite indie band discovery of 2018, I think they will only get bigger and better with time!

  • First time I've seen them live after months of desperately obsessing over their music and they did not disappoint. I had an amazing experience, Ellie is basically an angel satisfying the adoring crowd with her stunning voice, and one of the most beautiful people in the world, and at the end Theo launched himself into the crowd. Their set list was amazing, opening with the head banging Fluffy and closing with the equally headbanging Moaning Lisa Smile. Giant Peach was a sensational highlight, along with the delicately beautiful Blush and White Leather, the crowd joined in an almost religious singalong. Go and see Wolf Alice, they are an incredible live band and one of the very best new bands around. I can't wait to see them again.

  • The concert was epic! Myself and my friend had 02 priority so we got in quickly and got a great place on the balcony where we could stand/dance.

I liked the support acts but they were definitely too loud and too rocky for me, think Wolf Alice is my limit in that area.

When Wolf Alice came on the stage they played amazingly and I did not sit down for the whole set.

The highlight for me was the end of Giant Peach at the Outro when Glitter and confetti was blown out onto the audience! A fantastic ending to a great show!

Hope Theo feels better soon with his elbow and hope he comes back soon but the stand-in was equally good!

Overall a memorable gig that is up there with the best.

  • I saw them a couple of years ago at Brixton so was obviously looking forward to another watch.I missed the first support as it's a bit of a mission to get to Ally Pally but caught Sunflower Bean who I really enjoyed. Then the main act - since Brixton they are more self assured and this showed at the gig. The sound is bigger and the band embrace this, along with connecting to the crowd when a guest was allowed on to play Moaning Lisa Smile. All in all I just really enjoyed it and get the vibe that they did to. Would I see them again, definitely. A good show from a very cool band. Thanks for a corker of a night.

  • The concert would have been a lot better if they had a decent sound system or soundman. If you went to the very back of the club, where nobody was and you couldn't see the band, the sound was OK, so it was probably just a tone deaf soundman. Was it the same one at Bears Den in Glasgow last year? There are good sound men out there like the one who mixed the sound for Dawes the night before in Glasgow, anyway the punters didn't seem to mind, I should have smoked what they'd been smoking, then I wouldn't have felt cheated when they played for 45 minutes.

  • My first Wolf Alice show at the Town Ballroom (my first time there). The venue was awesome - small, intimate, with good sound - standing room - no seats. Wolf Alice played for around 75 minutes, which seemed short, but was a perfect amount of time. All my personal favourites were played ... Moaning Lisa Smile, Bros, Visions of a Life, Giant Peach and Formidable Cool. The band plays great together - like they've been doing this since they were born. I am definitely going to see them again when I have the chance.

  • Excellent gig in the Olympia Dublin. Great mix between old and new music with all the favourites appearing. Ellie's voice is breathtakingly beautiful. Her vocal range was fantastic, seamlessly transitioning from heavy screams to angelic quietness when required throughout the gig. The lads played amazing too, with the bass player having a excellent stage presence. The visual effects and lighting was highly impressive in creating euphoric like moments. Excellent performance by the band all round. 8.5/10

  • Sold Out show in Washington,DC, A GREAT SHOW.

IF you can see them, run to the event with wild energy. They make you so happy by energetic playing and singing. Ellie & Joff have the chops to entertain you with great guitar, Theo on dynamic bass and expression while Joel is simply

pounding a massive beat, you can move with them.

I will see them again in Paris at La Cigale on

November 13th. Would love to say hi to them then.

Oh yes, Ellie is a songbird, simply wonderful!!!
