Biography

  • Porter Robinson (born July 15th, 1992) is an American electronic musician and DJ from Chapel Hill, North Carolina. He released his first studio record in August 2014.

Every now and then, you come across an artist who makes you feel like an underachiever, unambitious, or just plain lazy; given what he’s already achieved at the tender age of just twenty-two, you’d have to count Porter Robinson amongst that number. He kicked his career off at the age of just twelve, and his earlier work was heavily indebted to dance music that he was exposed to through his love of Japanese video games - Dance Dance Revolution being one particular example.

By 2012, he released a debut single, “Language”, that pretty much immediately garnered international attention; it was released outside of his native U.S. via the legendary Ministry of Sound, and was quickly picked up by Radio 1 in the UK, where it was added to their Essential Mix. His ever-growing stature in the dance world led to him being tapped for official remixes of songs by artists as internationally acclaimed as Deadmau5 and Avicii by 2013, and he rounded off a hugely successful summer the same year by playing some of the world’s biggest music festivals. August 2014 saw the release of his debut album, Worlds, which met with critical acclaim and cracked the top twenty in the U.S.

Live reviews

  • Recently, EDM has taken the U.S. by storm. Festivals and concerts are popping up everywhere, it’s played all over the radios and these once unknown DJs have become part of our music industry like any other well-known artist. All DJ sets seem to be compromised of a common formula: build up, drop, transition and repeat. Many of these DJs just take this mindset, play an intense set and call it a day. But there’s something special about Porter Robinson and when he’s performing you know it’s a Porter set. It oozes his personality, gives off his own flare and voice— and even if you don’t know much about Porter it’s like his set gives you a glimpse into his creative mind. Ultra Miami 2013, weekend two to be exact - that’s when I first saw him live. If you’ve either witnessed it in person or through the live stream, the Ultra Worldwide stage attracted tens of thousands of people in a space that was probably less than 200 feet long and wide. Not exactly ideal spectator conditions. I was sardined between the people around as I squirmed my way to the front because there was no way I wasn’t going to be front and center for my favorite artist of all time. When Porter came on, the crowd went wild as he played his classic tracks like “Unison” while throwing in some unique material ranging from 172bpm, techno and hardstyle—not your typical EDM set. And that’s what made it so amazing because no one saw it coming. He’s a risk taker and he plays what he believes in, not repeated mainstream music that’s been butchered over and over again. Mixed with his amazing video and light set that shined geometric patterns and beautiful digitally created landscaping like mountains and fields, everything about his set was Porter. The energy was incredible and I even forgot how little space I had as I slowly, but surely grooved my way to the front. Twenty minutes in, I made it. Porter just started playing “Easy” (feat. Mat Zo) and the crowd exploded in energy to his hit single. I shyly turned to this six-foot guy raging next to me asking if he could put me on his shoulders. He gladly obliged and as I rose, every other girl doing a double decker came down and in that moment, I was the only person seven feet above ten thousand people. I’m in tears trying to explain the absolute awe and adrenaline rush I experienced—no words to even describe the pure natural euphoria I felt as I looked to the front and see Porter jamming out as the chorus of “Easy” roles in and everyone including me was screaming the lyrics at the top of our lungs. Porter appropriately ended the emotional roller coaster that was his set with the famous “Language." That song says so little yet so much sentiment is given off by it and it just touches the soul. A perfect farewell song to a beautifully composed set.

  • The first time I saw Porter Robinson was at Spring Awakening in 2013. He's expanded as an artist completely. His new album "Worlds" is a soundtrack to anyone who lives in our World. We are our own worlds, and he lets us build them up and break them apart. Porter Robinson delivers an alternative, video-gamesque, soundtrack of the soul. His anthems will have you fist pumping and fighting for more airplay as they draw on nostalgic ballads and electro-pop. He plays with the sounds of our youth in a refreshingly emotional build. It's so refreshing to hear an artist who can keep my attention with a simple beat and strong layering. Porter Robinson will literally pour his heart out for you to see. His take on electronica music has evolved into a soundtrack we all can relate to. If he played this set at Red Rocks, I might just have to die after, nothing could top it.

  • Porter Robinson itself, means a lot to me. It was the first DJ that I saw at a rave and from that moment electronic music captured.

Since then I've been listening to his musing and every single song it's like a complete journey to me, I bet he's trying to express a lot with his songs and he's totally doing it. Sometimes words can't express feelings when it comes to listening to his music.

A couple months ago he turned his career in another direction with another side of him (a little bit more indie) but still, lots of bass, lots of synthesizers and as I previously mention, lots of FEELING. That's something you can't get from any artist. I really recommend people to take a look at his music and his live show, it's an awesome experience, it will blow your mind.

  • I haven't seen Porter live in years but it was SO worth it. He's made a drastic change in his sound with the release of Worlds, and he played nearly all of his songs on the album at the show. However, he didn't just play each song, he remixed and mashed them up - it was almost as if he released a new album. Also, he had a couple keyboards and an electric drum set onstage, to top the mic he was singing into. This tour isn't your average performance, and I was completely blown away by his energy and talent. Porter is probably my all-time favorite DJ, and seeing him live was incredible. Note: this review may be biased because I'm a huge fan. It was everything and more.

  • Amazing as usual.

His music has definitely taken a different direction but i really enjoy it. It doesn't sound like he's trying too hard like many of the other edm artists I've seen. His music seems more down to earth as if something traumatic, depressing happens in his life but he plays it off well in the genre he's chosen.

I saw porter Robinson once before in Davis but his light shows and stage presence has grown immensely from that time.

Love the world's album. Loved the show. Keep it up porter.

  • This show will stay in my heart forever. I wish I could go back and repeat this night. Porter and Madeon together created an absolutely amazing show. Perfect. I've seen both of them individually some years ago, when they were both still doing DJ sets that largely comprised electro-house. They've evolved so much, and put on a full live show that made me cry out of joy near the end. Seriously energetic and beautiful people with beautiful music and beautiful presentation.

  • Amazing show. The openers were Robotaki and Fakear, both of whom had solid sets. The meat of the show was seeing Porter and Madeon jam out together and it was stellar. It was the kind of show that blows your expectations out of the water regardless of how high they were. It was worth the 2.5 hour drive to see. If you're within driving distance, get your tickets and have your brain flambéd by two of the most talented producers around.

  • Honestly was incredible. Best night of my life, have never seen something so amazing in my life before. Was crying towards then end as I just couldnt explain how good it was. The supports were fun as well. Elk Road was pretty fun, me and my mates went crazy when he dropped O.G by TroyBoi and Lido was pretty cool. But yeah Porter Robinson & Madeon took it for me. Will always have a special place in my heart for them till the day I die.

  • Mind blowing. He kept dropping teasers throughout the night to get people pumped up. His new album does not need any hype however. Light show was incredible, very impressive for 930 club. The sound was a tad low volume. Im not sure if that was Porter making it that way, or if it was 930 clubs, sound system, but it could have been a LOT louder. All in all, it was a fantastic show, I would see again in a heartbeat.

  • A magical show, as expected. Porter and Madeon made old songs sound fresh with their collaboration. The first half hour was good, but then the rest of the show blew me away! I was somewhat disappointed that they ended early, when I had seen that the event was supposed to go until 11:30. I still felt fulfilled after Language, though.
