Live reviews

  • I came into hearing of this band from a Spotify pop punk band playlist. Having lived through the greatest period of punk in the early 80s and witnessed the best bands play, I was a bit skeptical of what I was about to hear. But I gave it a listen and was a bit shocked of how quickly the group Teenage Bottlerocket got their claws into me. The melody, hooks and lyrics immediately captured me in a way few other bands have. Then when I heard they were playing in Seattle I had to attend.

In all honesty my expectations for this show wasn't high since most punk bands just play loudly, yell occasionally and encourage the mosh pit to gear up for the next song. Teenage Bottlerocket put one of the best punk shows I have seen in a long, long time. TBR knew when to rock, when to engage the audience in a heartfelt, honest way and when to have fun. They never took themselves to serious and seemed to really enjoy what they do. The show consisted of the singer coming into the audience to throw drumsticks across the room to the drummer as he played, a dancing bear joining the band on stage, bringing a fan to play guitar “They Call Me Steve” and quite a bit more. This was an evening that continually surprised me. Each song’s performance got better as the night progressed I can’t express how much I thoroughly enjoyed myself. These guys know how to are tight as a unit and play well. They are even better at brining the audience along for the fun. The song that seemed to get the audience jazzed the most and my favorite was Skate or Die and the mosh pit made it even better. Please check this band out and if they are in a town near you, GO! You wont regret it.

  • Overall, I give this show a 3.5 out of 5.

    Successes:

    - The Copyrights (second band) were a very similar style of music, so even though I'd never heard them before, I quite enjoyed their performance.

    - The Teenage Bottlerocket set list covered a wide array of their discography, including most of my favourites.

    - The performance was great. The band moved around the stage well, while rarely creating distractions that would take away from their music.

    - The Venue was a nice concert venue for a band of that size. Seating was a limited, but we got their early so we got a booth.

    Weaknesses:

    - The Isotopes weren't on the bill and struggled to get much interest from the crowd. I saw them opening for The Real McKenzies recently and feel their performance that night at The Rickshaw was better than Sunday at Venue.

    - It started a bit late for a Sunday night. The Isotopes didn't come on stage until 9:30 so the show didn't end until after midnight. (and that caused us to miss the last Skytrain home!)

    - Drinks were expensive at Venue...even more than you'd expect.

Their best songs were I Found the One, My Name is Steve, Headbanger, Bigger than KISS, Bloodbath at Burger King, and Mutilate Me.

They did a couple covers as well (Blitzkrieg Bob and another I can't recall).

I'm glad I went. For less than $20, worth the price of admission.

  • Seeing Teenage Bottle Rocket was a real treat for me as I am a mighty big fan of the punk rock scene.

It was real refreshing to hear a band giving that earlier sound that made punk music so enjoyable for me. The sound of the band is down to roots simple in your face fast punk just like in the old days. Getting to see them was like being transported back to when I was a kid and going to those punk shows.

They have a type of sounds like a Ramones to NOFX style of playing, so you get a nice variety of musical styles. The band is amazing in getting the audience pumped up as they are always encouraging you to make the noise and sing along to the songs. The place was a little packed and there was not really a chance to dance around so that was a real bummer.

All in all the band has great energy and the song catalog is great. It really doesn't get any better than this for getting a nice feel of what punk rock used to be years back, it's a real must see if they come to your town make sure to catch them, if you're a fan of the genre you won't be disappointed.

  • It was a great show in Silver Spring at the Fillmore last night. I was really excited when I seen it was Teenage Bottlerocket playing w/ the Descendents, I have seen them 4 or 5 times now and it’s always great, I like them more each time. I was happy to hear “bloodbath at Burgerking” lol...one of my faves! It was cool I was able to bring my 17 year old daughter who grew up on punk...She thought it was the greatest thing ever and wants to go to every punk show now! Unfortunately it’s hard to find all ages shows, so I’m glad I got to get in the pit with her and have a good time and I’m glad she got to see the Descendents as well. I liked the black shirt with purple on it Teenage Bottlerocket had but they only had it in small which sucked because I deff would have bought it. I do love the pin I got though.

  • Teenage was awesome. Fast, furious, driving punk. The crowd responded as it should with a fun loving, active pit that only wanted more and more. Awesome to see Ray's 12 year old son Milo up on stage as well, crowd surfing to his delight. 5/5 stars. Pegboy nailed it as well, even though the Chicago-based Larry struggled a little to catch his breath in the Mile High City. Great show. Glad I didn't miss it!
