Ghostland Observatory (formed in 2004) is the American indie-rock and electronic duo of Aaron Behrens and Thomas Ross Turner, hailing from Austin, Texas, U.S.
Prior to forming Ghostland Observatory vocalist Aaron Behrens had played in the bands Dismount and Walking Helix, the latter with future Ghostland Observatory drummer/synth player Thomas Ross Turner. The pair made their debut on the album âdelete.delete.i.eat.meatâ issued by Turnerâs Trashy Moped Recordings in 2005. A year later the sophomore âPaparazzi Lightningâ arrived earning a number of positive reviews, despite the saturated electronica/indie market in which they are based. The band subsequently played at the 2006 Austin City Limits festival, which was recorded and later released as the live album âAustin City Limits: Music Festival 2006".
In 2007 the duo made their television debut performing the song âSad Sad Cityâ on âLate Night with Conan OâBrienâ, and released their second live album âLive At Lollapaloozaâ. Later in 2007 Ghostland Observatory released the EP âTwin Citiesâ on Trashy Moped ahead of their third full-length âRobotiqe Majestiqueâ in 2008. The record was supported with a national tour including dates at Californiaâs Coachella and New Orleansâ Voodoo Experience. The bandâs fourth studio album âCodename: Rondoâ appeared in October 2010 promoted by a show at Cedar Park Centre in Texas. The performance saw the duo expand their live show to include visual as well as auditory stimulants including lazers, mirrors and smoke rarely seen at live speed. In 2011 the pair performed in a light-hearted battle against rapper Snoop Dogg at Red Bull SoundClash on South Padre Island, Texas. Ghostland Observatory subsequently played sets at Pacific Festival in Orange County, California, CounterPoint Music Festival in Georgia, and Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado.
Read moreDo you like dancing, EDM music, and seeing a man on stage wearing a Texas flag for a cape? Do you want to rock so hard your face melts off like at the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark? Then stop messing around and get your ass to a Ghostland Observatory show!
Aaron and Thomas know how to put on a good concert. Aaron spends the majority of the show running back and forth on the stage like a frantic madman, spitting lyrics like watermelon seeds and making sure every single member of the audience gets a taste. Thomas, stationary behind a synthesizer and sporting a long Texas flag as a cape, rocks the beats and forces everyone to move their butts.
Then there's the light show. Every Ghostland show i've been to was like being at a 4th of July fireworks show, except with lasers and and more smoke (most of it coming from the audience). Lights + Beats + Lyrics = Face Melting Awesomeness.
Unfortunately as of January 2014 Ghostland Observatory is on hiatus while frontman Aaron works with his side project, but will return one day. When it happens, don't get left out of one of the best damn artists to come out of Texas.
There are some bands and artists performing on the circuit who seem to drift way below the radar yet those in the know are huge, huge fans. This is true of electro rock outfit Ghostland Observatory consisting of Aaron Kyle Behrens and Thomas Ross Turner. They have a great following mainly because they are so good at playing live, there really is no other way around it. The duo are complete experts onstage when it comes to the shared dynamics and the important balance between showmanship and musical efficiency.
Aaron is like a man possessed as he dances and lurches to the alt-funk beats whilst lasers fly above his head space. He wants every single audience member to be dancing along and he is not content until he believes that is happening. Although the music is complexing and it moves between concept pieces to strange synth led interludes overall there are moments of anthem for the audience to get really behind. Each musician gets chance to solo and it is Thomas who really demonstrates his skills through a dizzying drum solo that has everybody going crazy and clapping him along as he goes faster and faster.
Amazing show! All of my expectations were exceeded. Well worth the half decade long wait. They take you through adrenaline-filled, crowd jumping moments to sensual intersessions. Production was as colorful as it was clever. Could not recommend enough to people who enjoy live music. Or lasers in general.
Amazing performers...great stage show, incredible energy.... didn't want it to end but also did not know how they kept it up for so long... the encore featured a Prince cover.... legends.
Fucking great show! Iâve been listening to these guys for a while, so glad I got the chance to see them live. The exceeded my expectations! I hope they come back to philly!
