FAQ
Here are some answers to some of your most frequently asked questions about the Lakers’ salary cap and draft pick situations moving forward.
How much salary cap space can the Lakers have in the 2025 offseason?
Much like last summer, the Lakers are extremely unlikely to have cap room in the upcoming offseason. LeBron James would again need to opt out and take a sizable pay cut in order for the Lakers to sign someone with cap space.
If they were to execute a large salary dump trade, LeBron’s pay cut would not need to be as substantial to sign a free agent. Either way, the Lakers’ cap room depends entirely on LeBron’s willingness and desire to play ball.
If he opts into his contract or decides not to take a pay cut, the Lakers will not have cap space for 2025.
How much is LeBron James making?
After opting out this offseason and taking a small pay cut, LeBron is set to earn $48.7 million in 2024-25. He has a player option once again next season and if he chooses to opt-in, he’s set to make $52.6 million in the second year of his deal.
How much is Anthony Davis making?
Anthony Davis is making $43.2 million this season. Starting the 2024-25 season, AD’s three-year, maximum contract extension he signed last fall will kick in for the 2025-26 season, earning him $186 million over that span.
How much is Austin Reaves making?
The Lakers homegrown star of Austin Reaves cashed in on his breakout season in 2022-23 by signing a four-year, $52 million deal in the summer of 2023. While it’s significantly less than he could have earned by signing an offer sheet with another team, he still will make $12.9 million this season.
How much is Bronny James making?
After being selected with the No. 55 pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, Bronny James signed a four-year contract. For the 2024-25 season, Bronny will make $1.1 million.
How much will the Lakers pay in luxury taxes this year?
As things stand, the Lakers will more than double their luxury tax bill of next season as they are set to pay $18.5 million based on their current roster. Last season, they paid just $7 million.
What draft picks can the Lakers trade?
The Lakers can currently trade their own first round picks in the:
- 2029 or 2030 drafts
The Lakers also outright own their 2026 and 2028 first-round picks, but cannot trade them until those respective draft nights due to prior pick obligations from the Anthony Davis and D’Angelo Russell trades, respectively.
- 2031 draft
It is only possible for the Lakers to trade their 2031 draft pick if they don’t trade their 2030 pick. Teams can only trade picks seven years out. Paired with the Stepien rule, the furthest out the Lakers can trade a pick is 2031.
Additionally, the Lakers can currently trade the following second-round draft picks:
- 2024 Clippers pick
- 2025 Clippers pick
- 2025 Lakers pick
- 2027 Lakers pick
- 2030 Lakers pick
