WOUND DRESSING
INTRODUCTION
• Wound dressing is the cleaning of wound with an antiseptic solution
and the application of therapeutic materials to enhance wound
healing.
• An aseptic technique must be observed while carrying out surgical
dressing in order to prevent the transfer of pathogenic
microorganisms from one patient to another or from care provider to
the patient.
PURPOSE
• To protect the wound from injury
• To prevent contamination of the wound
• To keep the edges of the wound together
• To provide for local application of drugs
• To apply pressure to the area
• To absorb materials being discharged from the wound
PRECAUTIONS
• Sweeping and dusting must be completed at least an hour before
dressing commences
• Avoid unnecessary traffic in the ward
• Use face mask
• Fans and ACs should be put off
• Non-touch technique should be applied
• Provide privacy to the patient
• Dirty dressing should be done last

REQUIREMENT

• Small bowl with cotton balls • Bottles of lotion
and gauze swabs • Adhesive strappings and

• 2 dissecting forceps • Scissors
• 2 dressing forceps • Packet of face mask
• Sterile drape • Antiseptic jar
• Sterile hand towel • Receiver for used swabs
• Salvage bowl
METHOD
• One nurse can carry out the dressing procedure. The dresser could call for an assistant when necessary
• Explain the procedure to the patient and screen the bed
• All equipment must be sterile
• Wash hands, disinfect the trolley and set the trolley
• Take the trolley to the bed side; pour required lotion; turn back the bed linen and remove outer dressing
using your hands
• Wash hands thoroughly and dry
• Using your hands, take a pair of dissecting forceps to remove the dressing
• Discard the dressing in the receiver on the bottom shelf and discard the forceps in the receiver for used
instrument on the bottom shelf
• If a wound specimen is needed, take it at this stage before cleaning the wound
• Using your hands, take two pairs of forceps and use them to clean the wound from within out
• Clean the wound several times, each time with a new gauze swab from inside out or from cleanest part to
the most contaminated part
METHOD…
• Continue until the wound is clean
• Discard soiled instruments in the receiver for used instrument on the
bottom shelf
• Finish the bandaging, or strapping the dressing with hands
• Make the patient comfortable and leave the unit tidy
• Remove the trolley and empty the dirty dressings
• Clean the instruments and re-sterilize
• Wash and dry your hands
