COPING WITH STRESS

DURING ADOLESCENCE
OBJECTIVES
• The learners shall be able to discuss that
understanding stress and its sources during
adolescence may help in identifying ways to
cope and have a healthful life.
• Identify sources of one’s stress and illustrate
the effect of stress on one’s system.
• Demonstrate personal ways of coping with
stress for healthful living.

WHAT IS STRESS?

• Stress is the physiological or psychological


response to internal or external stressors
(American Psychological Association, n.d.)
• We are more likely to get stressed when we sense
danger, when we experience something new, or
when we confronted situations that are beyond
our control.
• Moreover, stress is a natural feeling or inability to
deal with specific demands and events.
TYPES OF STRESS
There are 2 types of stress:
EUSTRESS- is a term of positive stress
This kind of stress is something that motivates individuals. Example is
holiday season.

DISTRESS- refers to negative stress


It is cause by anxiety, unpleasant experiences, and a decrease I one’s
emotional aspect. Examples of this is school work, pressures of everyday
life, passing of a loved one and similar situations.
CAUSES OF STRESS
The cause of stress is called stressor. The American
Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (2019)
enumerated some of the causes of stress among young
people.

1. School task- the pandemic has changed the landscape


of education , and you have to deal with the challenges of
blended learning set up. It has likely caused you to make
an adjustment in your academic life and as a result, you
may not finish a certain task before the deadline.
2. Thinking negatively about
yourself – when you only see your
flaws and not your strengths, so
much that you are not able to love
and care for yourself anymore.
3. Changes in the Physical Aspect- as
an adolescent, you undergo different
changes within yourself, including your
body. You may grow taller, grow body
hair, and develop acne. These changes
can discomfort or make you self-
conscious or shy. Either feeling can be a
source of stress.
4. Misunderstanding with Peers-
Misunderstanding and conflict
between you and your friends are
unavoidable because you have no
control of the emotions you and your
friends will exhibit and how you all
will act depending on the situation.
5. Risky environment in the
community- unsafe structures,
hazardous places or loud noises in the
community are a few examples that can
make you uncomfortable and stressed
out.
6. Separation of parents or having a
broken family- this is one of the
challenging situations that you might
face as an adolescent. Living with your
family should afford you a sense of peace
and security and give you inspiration.
Separation of parents and similar
situations disturb this sense of peace and
security and cause frustration, all of
which may stress you out.
7. Family member is sick- when
anyone from your family get sick, you
will likely to worry and this doubles a
source of stress. In addition, you
might need to help out in taking care
of that sick family member. These
additional task can cause negative
emotions and fatigue and eventually,
stress.
8. Death of a loved one- losing a
loved one causes negative emotion
of grief, which can cause stress. It is
a long process and a natural
response that can be overwhelming.
9. Transferring to a new school-
there will be adjustments when you
transfer another school. These
adjustments, such as having to
introduce yourself, needing to make
new friends and getting used to the
environment itself, can eventually
cause stress.
10. Financial problems- finances
are one of the most common family
difficulties that must be addressed
properly. Poor income, family
members losing their jobs and not
being able to meet the basic needs
are all stressful situations.
EFFECTS OF STRESS
1.Psychological Effects

This includes experiencing anxiety,


difficulty concentrating and poor
judgement, as well as being pessimistic
or having negative thoughts.
2. Emotional Effect

This includes becoming easily


agitated, frustrated, and moody;
having low self- esteem and feeling
lonely and worthless.
3. Physical Effect

This includes having low energy;


experiencing headaches, body pain,
muscle tension and frequent colds;
and having high or low blood
pressure.
4. Behavioral Effect

This includes smoking, alcohol or


drug use, skipping classes, avoiding
some of tasks and constant
tardiness.

Direction: Form a five group. Your group will be given a challenging or
stressful situation. With your group mates, devise a healthy way to deal
with the stressful event assigned to you. Put your answers in the manila
paper and then present your output to the class.

Situation 1: Both of your parents will be working abroad. They told you to
live with your grandparents so they can look after you while they
are away. They also said that you will be transferring schools. You
are now at the second quarter of Grade 11 in your current school.

Situation 2: You are the leader of your group with five members in research
class. Three of your groupmates are not participating or helping in any way.

Situation 3: Your parents got separated. You will be living with your mother
alone and other siblings will be living with your father.

Situation 4: Your family is currently experiencing financial difficulties. Your


older brother, who is a university student decided to stop schooling
to look for work that will help your family’s basic needs.

Situation 5: Your boyfriend/girlfriend broke up with you. After three weeks,


you have discovered that he/she already has a new
boyfriend/girlfriend. He/she is also at your school.
