Leading and Managing change

• The importance of leading and managing change in schools or other organizations is that
leaders need management skills because their roles have become complex.
• Change is considered as basically a variation in pe-existing methods, customs, and
conventions.

• Since all a organizations, including schools, function in dynamic environments, they


constantly have to change themselves to succeed.

• What is change?

In Educational terms, change may come about in peoples’ knowledge, understanding,


skills, attitudes and behavior.
Activity
Suggest examples of changes you would introduce in school to make
learners improve their performance.
Managing organizational change

• Organizational change can bring changes in the ways managers carry out their critical tasks of

planning, organizing, leading and, controlling.

• There are four main processes involved in change management;

 Assessing the need for change

 Deciding on the change to make

 Implementing change

 Evaluating the change

• One of the most important aspects of developing effective change in schools is to foster

strategies that enhance: collaboration, cooperation and Communication that can bring

cohesion.
The process of change management.

Change management usually involves 4 stages:


 Preparing for the change(to prepare what might be
achieved by the new change)
 Initiating the change(e.g. creating awareness for the
change or showing reasons for change)
 Implementing the change( check for resources needed,
skills and possibly dealing with resistance that might arise)
 Consolidating change.(can move on with those who
support the change and keep analyzing the benefits and
reflecting the effectiveness of change)
Resistance to change

Resistance to change

• In any organization, including schools, any change results into different reactions
from members and more specifically resistance which is normally manifested in
different forms.
Resistance to change
• There are various reasons for resistance which include but not limited to:

Fear of the uncertainty or unknown

Fear of additional work and any other inconveniences

Fear that change may require new skills and competences

Threats to interpersonal relations in the organization

Some managers think that change may reduce their power/ influence.
The best way to avoid resistance to
change
Creating optimal conditions for change e.g. shared meaning, providing
support and coaching etc.

Showing the importance and benefits of the change like creating awareness
of the gap between the present gap and the desired future.

Allow the diversity in adoption of the change

Communicate effectively about the change

The best way of dealing with resistance to change

• Accept the fact that there will be resistance

• Take time to understand the reasons for resistance

• Improve the communication and only then start acting.
