PARASITOLOGY & IMMUNOLOGY

KEY INFORMATION

November, 2021

BIO3243: PARASITOLOGY AND IMMUNOLOGY

Parasitology: Study of the relationship between a parasite and

its host.

Parasitology refers to the study of infection with eukaryotic

protozoan, and invertebrate metazoan parasites, not bacteria,
viruses or higher chordate parasites.

BIO3243: PARASITOLOGY AND IMMUNOLOGY

IMMUNOLOGY
IMMUNOLOGY is the study of how the body (animal)
protects itself against infections and or/ infectious
diseases caused by microorganisms (pathogens) such
as bacteria, viruses, protozoa, and fungi, and also
parasitic organisms such as helminth worms.

Immunology also studies how the organism distinguishes self from

non self and allows to understand the origins and causes of auto-
immune diseases

➢ Owing to immunology, IMMUNOTHERAPY and VACCINATION

have been developed, many diseases were prevented and cured;
current research approaches are running to defy pathogens so as
to improve human wellbeing and health status worldwide! 3

Module aims and brief content

This module is intended to familiarize us with the life cycles

of parasites of major importance in Africa and to explain
how the immune system mounts a defense against them.

Content mainly includes life cycles of protozoan and

helminth parasites and an account of the specific and non-
specific immune systems.
