Dipayan WasteGen 220424

The document discusses calculating greenhouse gas emissions from waste generated in operations. It provides an example of calculating emissions from fleshing waste from a tannery that is disposed of in a landfill. The example calculates emissions from incinerating leather waste, operating a steam boiler to process the fleshing waste, and the electricity usage of related equipment.

Assignment – Waste Generated in Operation

Scope - 03
Category description: -
Category 5; includes emissions from third-party disposal and treatment of waste generated in the reporting
company’s owned or controlled operations in the reporting year. This category includes emissions from
disposal of both solid waste and wastewater.

Brief about the GHG Source: -

Let assume the scenario in Leather Industry that situated in Kolkata.
Waste generated by the tannery after the liming process is named as Fleshings Waste which is a
composition of Protein & Triglycerides which is disposed in a open landfill.
Recently “XYZ”, an eminent non-profit organization has facilitated the activities of Waste to Wealth by
transforming the waste to value added product through two specific system;
1. Tallow Extraction (Thermal Hydrolysis and Acid Purification through steam boiler),
2. Biogas generation (RSE) for domestic purpose (90% Methane contain).

Baseline:
Conventional practice of their waste disposal in the landfill and incineration of leather waste which emits
GHGs.

Endline:
Transforming the waste into value added product where one interventions has significant GHG emissions
via Steam Boiler and electricity consumption for operating motor of the system (TE).
Calculating emissions from waste generated in operations
Different types of waste produce varying amounts and types of greenhouse gases. Fleshing waste, for example,
falls into this category.
the following greenhouse gases may be generated:
CO2 (from degradation of both fossil and biogenic carbon contained in waste)
- through incineration of Leather Waste,
CH4 (principally from decomposition of biogenic materials in landfill or WTE technologies)
- Fleshing waste disposal.

Companies may use any one of the following methods to calculate emissions from waste generated in their
operations,
but managed by third parties:
Supplier-specific method, which involves collecting waste-specific scope 1 and scope 2 emissions data directly
from waste treatment companies (e.g., for incineration, recovery for recycling) – Leather Waste incineration for
making crude fertilizer for local market.

Waste-type-specific method, which involves using emission factors for specific waste types and waste treatment
Methods, - Which includes the emission factor of fleshing waste, Steam boiler (exact running time for the
w2w treatment) etc.

Average-data method, which involves estimating emissions based on total waste going to each disposal method
(e.g., landfill) and average emission factors for each disposal method.
To optionally report emissions from the transportation of waste, refer to category 4 (Upstream transportation and
distribution) for calculation methodologies. – Transporting the waste to 120 kms from Bantala for disposal.
Data required for Scope 3 Category 2 – Capital goods
Calculating emissions; (Sample Data)
As per the experience,
A single process of tallow extraction required 2 hrs of cooking

Where, Steamline is running for 1 hrs

The tallow extractor is working for 2 hrs

If, the Wood Boiler runs for 1 hr

Steam Pressure 0.5 BarG
Steam Velocity 25 m/s
Pipe size 15 mm (0.5 inch)

Steam Flow Rate 3600*pi*(v/V)*(d/2)^2

4.91 kg/h

Wood considered Log Woods; Dry 20% MC

Assuming, lower efficiency of boiler at 60%,
(Calorific Value of Wood * Efficacy) /
The amount of steam generates
Heat generated on Boiler
3.413 Kg of steam

Calorific Value of Wood 3527 KJ SOURCES

Efficacy of Boiler 0.6 Unit
(Heat of steam at atm. - Sensible heat of
Heat generated on Boiler
water)

Amount of Actual Steam / Steam

620 Kcal/Kg
Sources:
UNIDO study, Gabi
Amount of Wood required to get 3.413 kgs of steam
generates at 60% efficacy
1.44 Kgs require in 1 hr.

Considering higher carbon contain in the wood 1.8 kgCO2eq

Carbon emission thorugh steamline for 1 hour will be 2.59 KgCO2eq / hr.

The carbon footprint emission recorded through

Agitator / Stirrer 3.7 KW 5 HP
Protein Pump 2.2 KW 3 HP
Filter Press 1.5 KW 2 HP

Electrical consumption;

Conveyor 4.476 kWh

Agitator / Stirrer 7.46 kWh
Protein Pump 4.476 kWh
Filter Press 2.984 kWh
Total electricity consumption 19.396 kWh

The GHG emission recorded 17.65 KgsCO2eq / Batch

Total GHG emission Recorded 20.24 KgsCO2eq / Batch

0.020 tCO2eq / Batch

Total working days in Month 20 Days
