DANCE
dance, the movement of the body in a rhythmic way, usually to
music and within a given space, for the purpose of expressing an
idea or emotion, releasing energy, or simply taking delight in the
movement itself.
ELEMENTS OF DANCE
Space: refers to the space through which the dancer's body moves (general or personal space, level,
size, direction, pathway, focus).
Time: refers to the movement of dancers through time, and specifically within relationship to the
music, tempo, meter, or rhythm.
Force/Energy: the force applied to dance to accentuate the weight, attack, strength, and flow of a
dancer's movement (sharp, strong, light, heavy, bound, free-flow).

BALLET
Ballet originated in the Italian
Renaissance courts of the 15th century.
Noblemen and women were treated to
lavish events, especially wedding
celebrations, where dancing and music
created an elaborate spectacle. Dancing
masters taught the steps to the nobility,
and the court participated in the
performances.
BALLROOM
Ballroom dance" refers to traditional
partnered dance forms that are done by a
couple, often in the embrace of closed
dance position ("ballroom dance
position"). These include waltz, swing,
tango, salsa and blues
CONTEMPORARY
Contemporary dance is a style of expressive
dance that combines elements of several dance
genres including modern, jazz, lyrical and
classical ballet. Contemporary dancers strive to
connect the mind and the body through fluid
dance movements
HIP HOP
Hip hop dance is a style of street dance form that
evolved from hip hop culture and hip hop music.
It borrows elements from a number of different
styles like African dance, tap, and ballet. Hip
hop dance began as a freestyle dance performed
in the streets by dance crews, mostly to hip hop
music.
JAZZ
Jazz dance is a form of dance that
combines both African and
European dance styles. This high-
energy dance has a liveliness that
sets it apart from traditional dance
forms, such as classical ballet.
Like jazz music, jazz dance
features improvisation.
TAP DANCE
Tap dance is a form of dance
characterized by using the sounds of
tap shoes striking the floor as a form
of percussion. Two major variations
on tap dance exist: rhythm tap and
Broadway tap. Broadway tap focuses
on dance; it is widely performed in
musical theater.
FOLK DANCE
A folk dance is a dance that reflects
the life of the people of a certain
country or region. Not all ethnic
dances are folk dances. For example,
ritual dances or dances of ritual origin
are not considered to be folk dances.
Ritual dances are usually called
"Religious dances" because of their
purpose
IRISH DANCE
Irish Ceili (pronounced "kay-lee)
Dancing is a very traditional dance
form. It originated in the 1500's and is
always performed to traditional Irish
music. The Ceili Dances consist of
quadrilles, reels, jigs and long or
round dances. These were the most
native Irish traditional folk dances.
