Introduction to Dance:
Dance is a performing art form consisting of
sequences of movement, either improvised or
purposefully selected. This movement has aesthetic
and often symbolic value. Dance can be categorized
and described by its choreography, by its repertoire
of movements, or by its historical period or place of
origin.
 
What is Dance Genre?
A dance style, or a dance genre is simply a certain
type of dance. Different kinds of dance styles include
ballet, modern dance, hip-hop and diverse fold dance
from around the world.

Ballroom is a partnered dance in which partners move rhythmically while conveying musical
qualities through step patterns. Ballroom dance is divided into two styles: Smooth, or Standard,
and Rhythm, or Latin. The Smooth, Standard style emphasizes grace, beauty, and fluidity of
movement. Dancers move around the entire floor in a counter-clockwise rotation. The pair is
continually moving about the dance floor, going from one spot to the next in a predetermined
rhythm.

A folk dance is one that has been passed down through the centuries and is based on
tradition. "Folk" dancing is not simply one style; it's actually a wide variety. With its
roots in the Old World, each form of folk dance may be traced back several generations
(or centuries). Because they're typically so basic, novice dancers may easily pick them
up and learn them. In their nations and local regions, folk dances grow on their own, in
a spontaneous way.

A Cotemporary Dance is a choreography that a typically
interpretative, focusing on emotions, feelings and storytelling. It can
be done barefoot, with ballet flats, nude, fully dressed, with or
without music.

Tap dancing is an example of a choreographed non-partnered dance in which one or more
dancers participate. The dancer's shoes have tiny metal plates on them that provide a
rhythmical tapping sound. The dancer also becomes a percussion musician in this way.
Syncopation and improvisation are common features of tap dancing. Tap dancing can also be
done without music, which is known as 'Capella' dancing.
