SIMPLE TENSES

OF THE VERB
Simple Present
This tense mainly expresses action or
state of being that takes place in the
present time. The present tense is also
used to express habitual action or
permanent condition.
The simple present tense has two forms – the base
form and the -s form. Sometime markers, such as
daily, every day, every night, every week, monthly,
yearlyand each morning, help indicate actions
that are done regularly.
examples:
I pray the rosary every night.
The class secretary checks the attendance daily
Simple Past

This tense expresses action or state of being that

occurred at a definite time in the past. Time
markers such as yesterday, a week ago, and last
summer often tell the action took
place at a definite time. Verbs in the simple past
tense may be in the regular or irregular form.
The past tense of a regular verb is formed by
adding --d or –ed to the base form. The
irregular verbs are formed in different ways.

Examples:
I took an exam yesterday.
They visited the farm last week.
Simple Future

This tense expresses action or being that will

happen very soon, at a later time or in
the future. It is usually formed with the helping
verb will or shall plus the base form of the verb.
Future time markers, such as tomorrow, next
week, in the years to come, and a year from
now, indicate future time.

Examples:
I shall see her tonight.
April will attend their wedding next month.
