Text types are any pieces of writing that you read or create. These can be
anything from novels, newspaper reports, and textbooks to recipes,
movie reviews, and game instructions. When you read an advertisement,
an email from a friend, or a research article, for example, the kinds of
words, phrases, grammatical patterns, writing styles, and structures you
encounter differ. In other words, text types differ in features and
purpose.
There are different text types that you usually encounter or use. Each
one has its own purpose and specific language features. In this module,
we will discuss only the four most-commonly used text types:
classification, explanation, enumeration, and time order or recount

A.CLASSIFICATION TEXT Classification text, also
known as text tagging or text categorization, is the
process of categorizing text into organized groups. In
this type of text, items or ideas are sorted according to
commonalities.
Also, in this type of text, the writer presents the overall
idea then splits it into parts to provide clarity and
description. Readers can recognize classification text
through signal words such as: first, finally, to begin,
next, in addition, on the other hand, for example, or then

The text presented above is a classification text type. The details are classified
into categories of dogs such as being wild or domesticated, having a particular
breed, and serving a specific purpose. The signal words used are on the other
hand, categorized, and classified.
B. EXPLANATION TEXT Explanation text provides descriptions to looking at
things like causes and reasons. They move beyond retelling of what happened,

such as in a simple report, to address the why and how of what happened.
Explanatory texts usually tell how or why things occur with a general statement
that introduces the topic to be explored Time connectives used such as first,
after, then, next, and finally.
C. ENUMERATION TEXT Enumeration text is one which presents ideas by listing the
kinds, characteristics, classes, types, parts, ways, groups, and other information of

a certain thing. It usually starts with the statement of the general subject that is
broken down into parts, classes, etc. These parts are introduced by signal words
such as the following, first, next, and so on; or they may be listed using commas or
enumerated one by one like what is shown in the example below.

D. RECOUNT TEXT When the text presents events that are
arranged in their order of occurrence in time, this text is called
recount. A recount retells an experience or an event that
happened in the past. A recount may inform, entertain, reflect, or
evaluate. A recount may focus on a specific section of an event or
retell the entire story. A recount should always be told in the
order that things happened.
The text type presented above is a recount text. The details are
arranged in chronological order. The transitional/signal words
used are then and after.
Take home Activity:
Gather some clippings showing examples of the four
different text types. Paste these on a sheet of bond paper
then label with the correct text type
Texts are written for a variety of forms and purposes. These forms of
writing are known as text types.

Reading Intervention:
Text-type is the classification and definition of the
way a text is written such as its structure, purpose, and
language features. The vast majority of texts have
three main objectives or purposes namely: to make an
argument, to inform, and to tell a story. To achieve
these goals, authors use one or more of the following
five (5) text structures:
The two things that are being
compared are apples and
bananas. They share a
common similarity that they
are both healthy fruits and
both of them can be turned
into delicious desserts such
as apple pies and banana
cakes. Their differences are
their place where they grow.
Apples grow in colder
climates while bananas enjoy
the warm climate.
Compare and Contrast
Comparison and Contrast is a way of organizing and explaining the
similarities and differences between two or more things. The reader must
remember that this structure focuses on discussing BOTH the similarities
(things that are common to them) and differences (things where they are not
the same). If it only explains the similarities, it is only comparing. Similarly, if it
only discusses the differences, it is only contrasting.
This text type is quite easy to identify because the speaker usually goes
back and forth between two subjects while giving their similarities and
differences.
Here are some signal words that may indicate the comparison and contrast
pattern: like, unlike, both, neither, similar, and different
Directions: Write Yes if the paragraph shows comparison
and contrast and cross mark No and if not.

are both important in ensuring that we live a healthy life.

healthier, the egg yolk has more actual nutrients. Some
doctors do believe that to get the most complete nutrition,
both egg white, and egg yolk is needed to be consumed.

Butterfly Life Cycle Butterflies go through a life cycle that has four different
stages called metamorphosis. The first stage begins when a female butterfly lays
eggs close together on a leaf. About five days after the eggs are laid, a tiny worm
creature hatches from each egg. This is the caterpillar or larvae, which is the
second stage. The caterpillars are really hungry as soon as they hatch so they start
to eat and eat the leaf that they were born on. All of the eating makes the
caterpillar grow. Once they are finished growing, the caterpillars make a chrysalis
which is also known as a pupa or cocoon which makes the third stage. This helps
protects the caterpillars as they continue to change. Finally, as the caterpillars rest
in their pupas, they eventually start to turn into butterflies. They hatched from
their chrysalis and fly off as beautiful butterflies.

The Earth’s surface is constantly changing through slow

caused by air, water, and wind. Another change is caused by
earthquakes that originate deep inside the planet. More
sudden and violent than erosion, an earthquake results when

How to Purify Cloudy Water
Boiling is perhaps the safest way to purify cloudy water. You will
need a boiling pot, fire, salt, a coffee filter or cloth, charcoal and
cotton. First, prefilter the cloudy water with a coffee filter cloth
or folded cloth. Then boil the filtered water. Add a small amount
of salt to improve the taste of water as it is boiling. If you are
above 2000 feet altitude, boil for three minutes. Next, let the

The Rabbit and the Turtle
One day a rabbit was boasting about how fast he could run. He was laughing at the
turtle for being so slow. Much to the rabbit’s surprise, the turtle challenged him to a
race. The rabbit thought this was a good joke and accepted the challenge. The fox
was to be the umpire of the race. As the race began, the rabbit raced way ahead of the
turtle, just like everyone thought. The rabbit got to the halfway point and could not
see the turtle anywhere. He was hot and tired and decided to stop and take a short
nap. Even if the turtle passed him, he would be able to race to the finish line ahead of
him. All this time the turtle kept walking step by step by step. He never quit no
matter how hot or tired he got. He just kept going. However, the rabbit slept longer
than he had thought and woke up. He could not see the turtle anywhere! He went at
full speed to the finish line but found the turtle there waiting for him.
