Counselling
• A supportive relationship that enables clients to explore their
problems, understand their problems and resolve their problem.
• Counselling is a therapeutic relationship through which Counsellor
helps client to address and resolve his or her problems.
• In this process, Counsellor develop insight within the individual
about right or wrong.
• In Counselling process, Counsellor enables client or make him
confident to take his or her decisions or come out from worse
situation.

• Providing Information
• Giving Advice
• Giving suggestions
• Taking decisions on the behalf of client
• Providing resource to client
• Providing readymade solutions to client

Purpose of Counselling
• The basic purpose of counselling is to help people use their
existing problem-solving skills more effectively or to
develop new or better coping skills. 
• To help people to solve their difficulties.
• To encourage developing right attitudes.
• To help clients achieve their personal goals, and gain greater
insight into their lives
• To assist individual in educational and vocational planning.

Ethical Issues
• Violation of confidentiality
• Negligent practice
• Claiming expertise, one does not posses
• Imposing one’s values on a client
• Creating a dependency in a client
• Sexual activity with client
• Certain conflicts of interest
• Questionable financial arrangement, such as charging excessive fees

Reason for Ethical Codes


Ethical codes are designed to provide some guidelines for the
professional behaviour of members.

Ethical standards exist for many reasons:


• Ethical standards protect the profession from government.
They allow the profession to regulate itself and to function
autonomously instead of being controlled by legislation.

• Ethical standard help control internal disagreement and


promoting stability within the profession.
• Ethical standard protect practitioners from public, especially
in regard to malpractice suits. If professionals behave
according to ethical guidelines, the behaviour is judged to be
in compliance with accepted standards.

COUNSELLOR PREPARATION
• Education:
•Masters or bachelors degree in teaching and education .they should
have basic course in principles and practice of the guidance programmed and
additional area of training either in behaviour sciences of community health.
• Experience:
 2 years counseling experience.
 1 year of cumulative work experience in the field of school programmed.

• He will have masters degree in essential areas of


guidance programmed the area in training are:-
• Counselling process
• Understanding the individual
• Educational, occupational and vocational information
• Administrative relationship

What is psychotherapy
• Psychotherapy is the informed and intentional application of clinical
methods and interpersonal stances derived from established
psychological principles for the purpose of assisting people to modify
their behaviours, cognitions, emotions, and/or other personal
characteristics in directions that the participants deem desirable.

• It is also know as the ‘’talking cure’’. Talking, expressing,


verbalizing or sharing one’s pain is to potentially lead towards
healing.

Difference between counselling and psychotherapy


Counselling Psychotherapy
