Linear Regression Analysis
Regression analysis is simple statistical tool used to model the
dependence of a variable on one (or more) explanatory variables.

The functional relationship may then be formally stated as

equation, with associated statistical values that describe how well
this equation fits the data.
A simple linear regression is the least estimator of a linear
regression model with a single predictor (or one independent
variable).
Week This method gives what is generally known as the “best-

16 fitting” line.
Linear Regression Analysis
The regression analysis equation is being used to predict the value of
the dependent variable. The said equation is defined by

y = a + bx
where: X – the value of any particular observations of the independent variable
Y – the value of any particular observations of the dependent variable
b – slope of the regression line
Week
a – intercept of the regression line

16
Linear Regression Analysis
In deriving the linear regression equation, compute for the b and a.
To obtain the values of the slope (b) and the intercept (a) of the linear
regression equation, we have:

b= a=

Example: A teacher desires to know whether the typing speed of a
Comsci student (in words per minute) is related to the time (in hours).
Given the speed of a student (X) and the corresponding time it will
take for him to learn the word processing program (Y), predict the time
it will take the average student who has a typing speed of 72 words per
minute to learn the word-processing program.

Y = a + bx Solution: Substitute 72 to x and find Y.

Y = 110.59 – 0.59x Y = 110.59 – 0.59(72) = 68.11 hours

Therefore, it will take the student 68 hours
to learn the word-processing program.
Linear Regression Analysis
Follow-up questions:
1.) How long will it take a student who has a typing
speed of 64 words per minute to learn the word-
processing program?

2.) How fast should a student be in typing words in order

to learn the word-processing program in just 50 hours?
