Field Events

Field events in track and field can be categorized as throwing or jumping events. Throwing events include shots put, discus, javelin, and hammer throw where athletes throw objects either for distance or at a target. Jumping events involve leaping either horizontally like in long jump or vertically over a bar like in high jump, hurdling, pole vault, and triple jump. Rules for field events specify athletes get three attempts, the longest mark is counted, and ties are broken by the next best attempts. Measurements are recorded in metric units.

FIELD EVENTS

Group 2
Field Events
Field events are athletic
contest that take place on a
large field. They are
classified as throwing and
jumping categories.
THROWING EVENTS
-- or throwing games are
physical human competition
where the outcome is
measured by a player’s
ability to throw an object.
THROWING EVENTS
Two primary forms are:

• throwing for distance and

• throwing at a given target
range.
• The four most prominent throwing for
distance sports are in track and field:

• shot put
• discus
• javelin
• hammer throw.
SHUT POT - is a track and field event involving
"putting" (pushing rather than throwing) a
heavy spherical object—the shot as far as
possible
DISCUS THROW - also known as disc throw,
is a track and field event in which an athlete
throws a heavy disc—called a discus—in an
attempt to mark a farther distance than their
competitors.
JAVELIN THROW - is a track and field event
where the javelin, a spear about 2.5 m (8 ft 2 in)
in length, is thrown. The javelin thrower gains
momentum by running within a predetermined area.
Javelin throwing is an event of both the men's
decathlon and the women's heptathlon.
HAMMER THROW - is one of the four throwing
events in regular track and field competitions,
along with the discus throw, shot put and javelin.
The "hammer" used in this sport is not like any of
the tools also called by that name. It consists of a
metal ball attached by a steel wire to a grip.

JUMPING EVENTS
• The action of jumping is central to several
sports and activities. Some sports are
based almost exclusively on the ability to
jump, such as high jump in track and
field, whereas in other sports the act of
jumping is one of multiple athletic
abilities used in the sport, such as
basketball.
• High jump, in which athletes jump over horizontal bars.
• Hurdling, a foot race in which runners leap over hurdles.
• Long jump, where the objective is to leap horizontally as far
as possible.
• Pole vault, in which a person uses a long, flexible pole as an
aid to jump over a bar.
• Triple jump, the objective is to leap horizontally as far as
possible, in a series of three jumps.
