Contemporary art of

the Philippines
(Ilocos Region)
ILOCOS NORTE
 Tattoo de Iloco- it is a art studio in Ilocos Norte that performs
contemporary art by means of tattooing. The owner/artist of this studio
is Janer Santos who is a graduate of Fine Arts at Bel-Arte School.
 This was his artwork when he joined his first ever competition but he did
not win.
ILOCOS NORTE
 Abel or Inabel- is a fabric customarily made of cotton fiber turned
into spools of beeswax-brushed yarn & woven in a handloom.
Weaving the this requires mathematical precision. Each strand of
thread is meticulously counted & arranged according to color before
it is tensioned into the loom. And in a rhythmic pattern, the steps of
the wooden pedals & the knots of each crisscrossing weft have to
move seamlessly or everything goes in a messy tangle.
 Agab Abel or Abel weavers- mostly old women (e.g.
Milagros and Magdalena Gamayo)

 Burnay Jars- it is a molded unglazed earthen jars. It was originally
used to age vinegar, wine & bagoong or fish paste. The people who
makes these jars are called Agdamdamili.

 Saint Augustine Church (Paoay Church)- It is the Roman Catholic
church of the municipality of Paoay, Ilocos Norte in the Philippines.
It is famous for its distinct architecture highlighted by the
enormous buttresses on the sides and back of the building. It is
declared as a National Cultural Treasure by the Philippine
government in 1973 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site under the
collective group of Baroque Churches of the Philippines in 1993.

 Mary Ann Licudine- Her art is inspired by her own
dreams, nightmares, childhood memories, as well as God,
nature, music and other great artists. Once inspiration
hits her, May Ann’s paintings and drawings radiate and
overflow with her emotions.

 Alger Guevarra –He is well-known to his realistic art
using ground slippers. This was awarded with the 3rd
place in Ripley’s Believe or Not an international art
contest called #RipCycle. This artwork named “Boxers”
featuring Pambansang Kamao, Manny Pacquiao and an
opponent.
PANGASINAN
 Oasiwas- comes from the Pangasinense word for swinging.
Following their good catch, the fishermen will usually
celebrate by drinking wine and dancing, and by swinging and
circling with the lighted lamps on the hands of the dancers.

 Dina Gadia- she’s from Anda, Pangasinan. She is a
painter and a collage artist .Her early works are
influenced by Pop, Surrealism and Imagism and
referenced diverse sources such as advertisements,
history, science, fine arts, cinema (B-movie posters in
particular), comics, accessories of everyday life and the
new globalized pop culture.
