The standard form of the equation of a circle with
its center at the origin is

r is the radius of the circle so if we take the square root of the


right hand side, we'll know how big the radius is.

Notice that both the x and y terms are squared. Linear


equations don’t have either the x or y terms squared.
Parabolas have only the x term was squared (or only the
y term, but NOT both).

You can find the center and radius easily.

Example 1. A circular play area with radius 3 m is to be
partitioned into two sections using a straight fence as
shown in Figure 1.20. How long should the fence be?

Solution: To determine the length of the fence, we need to


determine the coordinates of its endpoints. From Figure 1.20,
the endpoints have x coordinate -1 are on the circle x2 + y2 =
9. Then 1 + y2 = 9, or 𝑦 = ±2 2. Therefore, the length of the
fence is 4 2 ≈ 5.66 𝑚
Example 2. A street with two lanes, each 10 ft wide,
goes through a semicircular tunnel with radius 12 ft.
How high is the tunnel at the edge of each lane? Round
