Magdalena Gamayo is a 88-year-old textile weaver from Ilocos Norte, Philippines who was awarded the 2012 Gawad sa Manlilikha ng Bayan for her mastery of traditional abel weaving techniques. She learned the art of weaving from her aunt at age 16 and continues to arrange threads on her loom despite being nearly blind. Gamayo has taught herself traditional Philippine patterns like Binakol, inuritan, kusikos, and sinan-sabong that exemplify the best of Filipino abel weaving traditions.
