Present Simple

When we use he, she, it, we add -s to the verb.

Example:

• I play football.
• He plays football.

Spelling Rules for Third Person Singular:


Verb Ending Rule Example
Most verbs Add -s read → reads
-s, -sh, -ch, -x, -z, Add -es watch → watches,
-o go → goes, fix →
fixes,
wash → washes
Consonant + y Change y → i and study → studies
add -es try → tries
cry → cries
Vowel + y Just add -s play → plays
enjoy → enjoys

Examples:
• pass → passes • buzz → buzzes
• wash → washes • go → goes
• watch → watches • study → studies
• fix → fixes • play → plays

Remember:

• I / You / We / They → don’t add -s [We live in Aswan.]


• He / She / It → add -s / -es / -ies [Dad goes to work by car.]
