APPEARANCE & ATTIRE
1. The teacher’s hair color should be black or dark brown only.
2. The teacher is required to wear business casual or formal office attire. Wearing sleeveless, too sexy or low-
scooped shirts is not allowed.
3. Though students may wear their mask (for their safety at school), the teacher is prohibited to wear any
kind of mask during the lesson.
4. The teacher should be presentable, neat, and smart-looking.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT
5. The teacher should ensure that his/her backdrop is plain smooth white or any light color.
6. The teacher’s working space must be clutter-free, sufficiently lit, and the teacher’s face must be seen clearly.
Be sure that the lighting is not reflecting off your glasses.
7. The teacher must use a noise cancellation application or use a headset with noise cancelling feature.
8. The teacher’s camera angle should be at shoulder level, and passing of individuals should not be seen
during the class.
TEACHING ETIQUETTE
9. The teacher is expected to always sit straight without doing unnecessary movements or sounds such
as waving to other people, eating, chewing gum, scratching the face, fixing hair, chatting with co-
workers, yawning etc. Showing *unnecessary gestures such as pointing your finger to the student,
doing finger heart, handshake, high five or any gestures which are not acceptable in Japanese
culture are strictly prohibited.
10. The teacher should maintain good eye contact with the student, and refrain from looking down if not
needed.
11. The teacher is expected to speak gently and softly. Arguing with the student or raising your voice is an
act of unprofessionalism.
12. The teacher is not allowed to use a cellphone or any other gadgets while conducting a class.
13. Do not say anything about the student’s appearance, outfit or physical things, especially when the student
is from the opposite sex. Do not tell your student “You’re beautiful/handsome.” “Your voice is cute.”
14. Do not ask your student to remove his/her facemask. As long as you can hear the student clearly, the
class must continue.
15. The teacher is prohibited to ask any personal information from the student such as age, birthday, address,
SNS (Social Networking Sites), parents’ jobs etc.
REQUIRED TEACHING SKILLS/STRATEGIES
16. The teacher is required to use the English language all the time. Using direct and simple words for
instructions is encouraged. Using Japanese words or phrases which are not presented in the lesson is strictly
prohibited.
17. The teacher must use hand gestures to help the student understand instructions or questions better.
Examples of acceptable gestures are thumbs up, OK sign, Read silently (finger to lips), Can you hear me? (hand to ear),
nodding slowly when the student is answering, and waving.
18. The teacher should avoid having blank facial expressions while the student is answering or speaking.
Always smile or nod along.
19. The teacher should praise his or her student if the student does well or answers correctly. Always give
praises that are appropriate to the student's level and are motivating with a smile. Add a variety and do not
use the same praise throughout the class. For example, Teacher only used “Good job!” to praise his or her
student. “Nice!”, “Nice try”, “Great!” and so on may be used, depending on the student’s level.
20. Make sure to share the troubleshooting cards inside the classroom whenever there is a technical problem
or if the student is having a hard time understanding instructions. Always report any issues to the team
leaders.
21. The teacher must be mindful of the student’s mistakes and use recasting and elicitation techniques to
correct unclear answers. You must help the student by giving hints or samples.
22. No need to use honorifics or adding -san, -chan or -kun to your student's name for OST classes (though
this is okay for GnGn lessons). Never use any terms of endearment such as dear, sweetheart etc as well.
23. Always use grammar and vocabulary that are appropriate for the student’s level. For low-level students,
always use simple language.
24. It is encouraged to give the student meaningful and helpful feedback at the end of the lesson
(hamburger/sandwich method). Afterwards, wait for the student to exit the room first or advise your student
to exit first.
25. Remember that our goal is to make students learn and enjoy lessons with us at the same time. Always
smile and be kind.
