EFL classroom management


Definition of classroom management:
Classroom management refers to the ways in
which student behavior ,movement and
interaction during a lesson are organized and
controlled by the teacher.
Definition of discipline:
To maintain order and to keep the group on task
not to spot and punish those students who are
misbehaving.
Students’ seating
The way in which the students are seated in
classroom. It can influence in students’
achievement.
In some bad cases ,the desks are fixed to the
ground . but there are many good ways for
students’ seating:
For the smaller classes , each group is seated
round small tables.
But for larger number and with adult or teenage:
1-A horseshoe may be desks in a U-shape with a
hollow center.
2- students in a semicircle on chairs with arm-
rests and no desks.
3- students seated around three sides of a larger
table , with the teacher at one end.
In any case you choose or imposed on you , keep
these principles in mind:
1-try to maximize eye contact
2-Students’ names
3-teacher talk and drawing attention
4-giving instructions
5-using pair and group work
6-setting time limits
7-role play
8- tasks for early finishers
9-whole class feedback
10- using whiteboard

Role play:
This is a technique to vary the pace of the lesson .
teachers are advised to use the role play
activities to motivate the students and help the
less motivated students to take part in the
lesson. A good examples of role play:
1- The hide (item) and guessing game.
2- Making interview of customer and shop
assistant ,doctor and patient .

Tasks for early finisher:
This happens when students finish an
assignment while other students are still working
on it. Teacher have to include early finisher
activities with every [Link] can be related
to the current topic , educational games, silent
reading or writing.

management:
1-planning and preparation:
Preparation is very important to maximize the
learning opportunities for your students.
Planning allows for effective transitions between
activities.
2-Transparent expectations:
-make sure that your students are aware of what
is expected from them at each stage of the
lesson.
-it is important to keep your instructions brief and
sequential.
3-A teaching persona “fake it till you make it”:
For new teachers, especially those who may not
be much older than their students, developing
teaching persona is very important.
4-smooth transitions:
It is very important to find effective strategies to
transition between the important parts of the
lesson.
- Visual prompts can be a great aid here.
- Use simple and consistent instructions.
5-Appropriate sequencing of activities:
-think about the time of day your lessons are
taking place.
Consider sequencing within the structure of your
lessons.
6-A wider support network:
-Build good working relationships with your
colleagues. They can offer advice and support.
Parents can be helpful ,too.
7-Employment of your students’ mother
tongue:
A students’ mother tongue can be a very effective
classroom management tool.
8- Damage control readiness:
-Ignoring low-level disruptive behavior in the
classroom may be necessary at times.
- teachers may have to build relationship with
problem students by time.
