IF MARS IS COLONIZED, WE MAY

NOT NEED TO SHIP IN THE BRICKS
We often wonder if somewhere hidden on Mars are the building blocks for life: microscopic bacteria and
small organisms. But what about the actual building blocks to build a civilization? A new study suggests that
the material we will need to build houses, buildings, and even entire colonies on Mars may already be there.
15. ______

Dr. Qiao, a materials scientist and engineer at the University of California, and his colleagues experimented
with a substance that is chemically and physically similar to what you might find on the surface of Mars, but is
made from particles on our planet. 16. ______ The team members found that they could turn this substance
into bricks. If it works with real Martian soil, the technique could make it possible to develop building material
on Mars at a low energy cost, making it much simpler to erect structures on the surface of the red planet.
17. ______

His team had previously worked with a lunar soil simulation, which needs a binding agent (a type of glue) to be
compressed into a brick. 18. ______ After that work, his team set their eyes on Mars. They realized they could
produce the same kind of bricks for the red planet with smaller and smaller amounts of their space glue, until
they found they could make Martian bricks just by using pressure. 19. ______ Team members think that it acts
like a glue to hold the particles together after they apply enough pressure to it.

“The paper is an interesting step in the right direction”, said Jon Rask, a research scientist at NASA who was not
involved in the study. The next challenge, according to Rask, would be to see if the results could actually hold
up in Mars. 20. ______

Adapted from nytimes.com

A. The explanation could be the iron oxide in the Martian soil.

B. They call it Martian soil simulant.
C. Though the bricks they created were small, they were stronger than steel-reinforced concrete, Dr. Qiao
said.
D. “I would like to see if these results are repeated under extremely cold and dry conditions”, he says.
E. As we learn more about the options available for future explorers and colonists, we have better chances
of succeeding in our first extraterrestrial colony.
F. The idea was that astronauts would take the binding agent with them to the moon, mix it with the soil and
then compact it into blocks that they could use to make structures.
G. The research is still early, but if further study and testing confirms its findings, it could be a key to settling
on and, later, colonizing the red planet.
