Chapter 3
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODOLOGIES
This chapter presents the research design and methodology that was employed in
the study. It also presents the discussion of the sources of data, the respondents, the
research instruments, data gathering procedures and the statistical tools utilized in the
treatment of the data gathered.
Research Method
This study utilized the mix-method, research exercise descriptive analysis as it is
corresponding to the nature of variable. Mix-method were utilized as it uses quantitative
method in the study for statistical treatment such as mean, frequency count, and
percentage. In addition, qualitative method for interpreting the participants responses in
the survey checklist and the documentary and thematic analysis were used to describe
and interpret the responses of our participants during the conduct of interview. According
to Rawat (2021), descriptive analysis is the type of analysis of data that helps describe
and show summarize data points in a constructive way such that patterns might fulfill
every condition of the data.
In this research, participants were able to point out the effect of parental
involvement. The researcher's questionnaire was crafted carefully to identify what skill of
the participants should be developed.
Sources of Data
The researchers obtained the primary data from the answers we gathered through
doing direct communication with the participants. There are two (2) research instruments
that were utilized for this study, namely, questionnaire for the interview and survey
checklist. By applying these methods, we were able to craft the answers or data from
different perspectives of the participants to cultivate better understanding of information
to successfully address the challenges encountered by the Senior High learners.
Meanwhile, the secondary data that are presented in this study were obtained from books,
articles, textbooks, websites, or a scholar's interpretation related to this study.
Participants
The participants of this study were the students under Senior High level in Itaran
National High School. These students were chosen since they are the learners who
struggle the most in having a parental support. Therefore, these students know the most
of what are the challenges and difficulties they encounter in aiming for parental
involvement for their improvement n academic performance, which makes them qualified
to be the participants of the study. This study utilized survey checklist and questionnaire,
since all Senior High students and the researchers were collaboratively work to address
the challenges encountered by the student.
Instruments
The research instruments employed for collecting essential data from participants
consist of structured questionnaire for interview and survey checklist.
The first instrument was a set of questionnaires. It ensures standardization in data
collection, allowing the researchers to systematically gather information for the study
while maintaining the accuracy and reliability in the research process. The indicators for
the activities, learning resources used, types of texts used, assessment, strategies, and
hinders in conducting research
The second instrument was a survey checklist. This instrument form of the survey
checklist serves as a valuable resource for researchers to ensure completeness and
accuracy in their survey instruments, contributing to the overall validity and reliability of
the research study. This method really helps us to figure out the possible results of the
study
Data Gathering Procedure
The study entailed a series of data gathering activities. The researcher gathered the
data through survey checklist and questionnaire given to the Senior High learner students
of Itaran National High School The data were tallied and organized for the statistical
computations Analysis, interpretation, and discussion of results were also prepared. The
gathered data for the difficulties were considered through documentary analysis
Conceptualization of the Research Problem. The focus of the study was conceptualized
based on the existing problem that mainly concerns the Senior high students about the
impact of parent engagement on their study.
Approval of the Research Title. The research was identified, conceptualized, and
presented to the research panel for approval during the proposal. Before the study was
conducted, permission to conduct the study was secured from the office of the school
principal, research teacher, and the research adviser.
Preparation of the Research Instruments. The research instruments that were used in
the conduct of the study was a structured survey checklist with indicators on the factors
that affect the student’s behavior in their academic performance
Administration of the Survey. After the approval of the request to conduct the study,
the researchers personally administered the survey to the students with informed consent.
Writing of the Research Report. After the organization of the data, analyze, and
interpreting the gathered data, the researchers prepared the research report that has gone
through several revisions and improvements to be finally prepared for the presentation in
front of the panels
Analysis of Data. Data analysis is the science of examining data to conclude the
information and to make decisions of expand knowledge on various subjects. This
process happens to obtain precise conclusions to help achieve goals.
This research will employ descriptive analysis. Descriptive analysis is the process
of using current and historical data to identify trends and relationships.
Statistical Treatment The statistical tools that were utilized in the statistical treatment
were frequency count, weighted mean, and percentage
Frequency count is simply the counting of the responses in the survey. This was used to
determine the weighted mean
The weighted mean is the average computed, it is the result of multiplying each data
point by its weight and summing those products and dividing the value sum of the weight
x value products by the sum of the weights. The formula is shown below
Percentage is calculated by taking the frequency in the category divided by the total
number of participants and multiplying by 100%.
X=
Where X = weighted mean
f = frequency
x= weight assigned
n= Total number of participants
