1. Leadership Qualities and Role of a leader;
[According to MONTGOMERY, ‘’ The capacity and will to rally men and
women to a common purpose is called leadership’’.]
[According to LA- PIERRE and FARNOWORTH, ‘’ Leadership is the
behavior that affects the behavior of the people more than their behavior
affects that of the leader’’.]
Quality of a leader;
1. Energetic; To be energetic is necessary for a leader in the field of
physical education. In fact, it is the basic requirement for this profession.
2. Friend and Affection; Friendliness and affection are also the
necessary qualities for a leader in this profession. These qualities are
developed through physical education programmes and Olympic Games,
especially during training as well as competitions.
3. Decisiveness ; A leader in the field of physical education should be
decisive . It means he should have the ability to take decision
spontaneously.
4. Technically Skilled ; A leader of physical education should be
technically skilled. He should be an expert in his discipline and
specialization.
5. Intelligent :- A leader of physical education should have intelligence.
In fact intelligence is the ability of an individual to find out the possible
solution of various complex problems. He\ she should be able to find the
simple solution to complex problems. An intelligent leader of physical
education can be a boon to this profession.
6. Teaching Skill; A leader in this field should have deep knowledge of
various teaching skills. Now, physical education is taught in classroom as
a subject . So, he\ she should be efficient in various teaching methods.
Along with this , he\she should be able to use body language, gestures,
expressions, etc. h
7. Creative :- A leader in the field of physical education should be
creative. Such leaders can produce new techniques or ideas, which are
needed in the field of physical education.
8. Interest in Research :- It is a significant quality of a leader in the
field of physical education. He/ She should have keen interest in research
work.

THE ROLE OF THE LEADER:
1. Structuring the Situation:-The leader’s foremost function is to structure
the situation for the group members. He\She interprets the actual situation
by clarifying ambiguities by emphasizing certain aspects. Then, he\she
focuses on the goal. In doing this, he\she must constantly strive for
objectivity, or he\she may deny important facts and distort the data. If
group members accept his\her interpretation, then co-operative behavior in
group is possible. The leader of physical education observes every
situation minutely. In tournaments or competitions, he\she interprets the
complete situation to members of a team. He\She clarifies doubts and sets
goal for his\her team.
2. Controlling Group Behavior :- The physical education leader always
tries to minimize certain types of individual behavior that may be against
the best interests of the whole team. The leader enforces rulers
effectively. He\She enforces the rule of the groups using rewards
punishments. He\She may warn the member or player of a team who
demonstrates indiscipline. He\She clarifies doubts may give rewards to a
player who performs well and proves himself \herself an asset to the
team. In this way the leader of physical education controls the group
behavior.
3. Speaking for the Group :- The leader plays a role of spokesman. He
spokes for the group. A leader must be sensitive to the emotions of
others. He should be skilful in translating the group’s feeling into both
words and action.
4. Planning for the Group :- The leader decides the ways and means by
which the group shall achieve its ends. This comprises both short and long
range planning and it is up to the leader to determine what part of the plan
would he\she share and what part he\she would confide to a select few
and or to none. Due to this role as a planner the followers develop a
feeling that a successful leader can solve all problems efficiently.
5. Execution of Plans :- The leader may execute various plans, which
he\she constructs for the benefit him\her followers. Execution is an
important factor in achieving the aims and objective of the group. It is
said that ‘well begun is half done ‘. So if plans are executed well, there
can be good achievement later on.
6. Leaders as representative: - Leader is the sole representative of the
group. In the field of sports, the leader speaks for the whole team. If team
faces any problem the leader discusses the problem with authorities.
7. Leader as a controller of internal relationships :- All matters
pertaining to discipline
of the group or team like rewards, warnings or arbitration are all in the
hands of leader. The internal differences are settled by leader.
8. Leader as an Exemplar :- A leader inspires the members of his//her
group or team by his/her quotable examples.
Creating Leaders Through Physical Education
It cannot be said that the future of physical education is very bright . In fact
, the future of physical education depends on the quality of leadership. So
the leaders who are working in this profession need to think about these
qualities. The present day leaders will have to inculcate appropriate
qualities in the students who are entering in this profession.

sports
Adventure sports are also popularly known as ‘ Extreme sports’ . as a
matter of fact , adventure sports are usually outdoor sports which involve
intense and sometime life threatening actions which create an adventure
atmosphere.
Adventure sports can be defined as outdoor sports or activities in which
the participants competes in a natural environment more against
himself/ herself than others.
Adventure sports are defined as activities in which there is a high degree of
risk to the participants.
