Content beyond syllabus 5: Bioplastic Preparation Activity
Date:23-05-2024
Introduction
Sreebavya V S, Assistant Professor at JCT College of Engineering and Technology, conducted an
activity where second-year Petroleum Engineering students were split into two groups of 10 students
to prepare bioplastic from aloe vera and coconut fiber powder. This activity supports the principles
of a circular economy.
Student Learning Outcomes
1. Bioplastic Production:
○ Students learned the process of creating bioplastics using natural materials like aloe
vera and coconut fiber powder.
2. Material Properties:
○ Gained an understanding of the properties and potential uses of bioplastics as an
alternative to traditional plastics.
3. Sustainable Practices:
○ Recognized the importance of using renewable resources and sustainable methods in
material production.
4. Circular Economy Principles:
○ Understood how bioplastic production fits into the circular economy by reducing
waste and promoting the reuse of natural materials.
5. Collaboration and Teamwork:
○ Developed teamwork and collaboration skills by working in groups to achieve a
common goal.
6. Critical Thinking:
○ Enhanced critical thinking by solving practical challenges encountered during the
bioplastic preparation process.
Conclusion
Through the bioplastic preparation activity, second-year Petroleum Engineering students at JCT
College of Engineering and Technology gained hands-on experience in sustainable material
production. They learned the benefits of bioplastics, the importance of renewable resources, and the
principles of a circular economy, all while developing essential teamwork and problem-solving
skills.
Report on Bioplastic Preparation Activity
A bioplastic preparation activity was conducted under the supervision of Sreebavya V S, Assistant
Professor in the Petroleum Engineering department at JCT College of Engineering and Technology.
The second-year Petroleum Engineering students were divided into two groups of ten and tasked
with producing bioplastic using aloe vera and coconut fiber powder. This hands-on activity aimed to
support the principles of a circular economy by utilizing renewable resources. Through this exercise,
students gained practical knowledge of bioplastic production, understanding the properties and
potential applications of bioplastics, and recognizing the environmental benefits of using sustainable
materials. The activity also fostered collaboration, critical thinking, and a deeper appreciation for
innovative, eco-friendly solutions in material science.
