Reading Comprehension Grade: VI

Read the passage and write the answers.

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain begins with Huck Finn, a young boy living in
Missouri, who tells the story in first-person. In Unit 1, Huck explains how he and Tom Sawyer had
recently come into a large amount of money from finding treasure. The Widow Douglas has taken
Huck in, trying to "civilize" him by giving him a home, new clothes, and education. Huck, however,
feels restricted by the widow’s rules and struggles to adapt to this new lifestyle.
Tom Sawyer, Huck's adventurous friend, forms a band of robbers, but their activities are mostly
harmless, based on fantasy. Despite Huck's discomfort with civilized life, he gradually adjusts.
Meanwhile, Huck's father, Pap, reappears, wanting to take control of Huck and his money. Pap is
abusive and drunk, which leads to tension in Huck's life.
This introduction sets the stage for Huck’s eventual decision to escape his troubled circumstances,
leading to the adventures.
