VOLUMETRIC TITRATION - I

AIM: Prepare 100 ml of M/20 Ferrous Ammonium Sulphate (Mohr’s salt). Determine the molarity and strength of the given
potassium permanganate solution.

CHEMICAL EQUATION:

SHORT PROCEDURE:
KMnO4 Vs of Mohr’s salt (FeSO4.(NH4)2.6H2O)

WEIGHT OF THE MOHR’S SALT TO BE WEIGHED TO

MAKE IN 100 ml SMF g

SL. CONTENT TITRATION

NO:

1 BURRETTE SOLUTION Unknown Potassium

permanganate (KMnO4)

2 PIPETTE SOLUTION 20 ml of Mohr’s salt

solution into conical flask

3 ADDED SOLUTION IN CONICAL FLASK 10 ml 4 N Dilute sulphuric

acid

4 TEMPERATURE Lab Temperature

5 END POINT Appearance of pale pink

6 INDICATOR Self-indicator

7 MOLECULAR WEIGHT OF MOHR’S SALT (FeSO4.(NH4)2.6H2O) = 392

OBSERVATION:

PREPARATION OF FAS SOLUTION:

Weight of FAS = 392/1000 X M/20 X 100

= 1.96 g

Volume of Mohr's salt (V1) = ml
Molarity of Mohr's salt (M1) = M
Volume of potassium permanganate (V2) = ml
Number of moles of Mohr's salt (n2) =
Molarity of potassium permanganate (M2) = ?M

CALCULATION
a) Molarity of KMnO4 solution:

ACCORDING TO MOLARITY EQUATION

Volume of KMnO4 (V2) x Molarity of KMnO4 (M2)/Volume of Mohr's salt (V1) x Molarity of Mohr's salt(M1) = no. of moles
of KMnO4 (n1)/no. of moles of Mohr’s salt(n2) i.e. V2 X M2/V1 X M1 = n1/n2

MOLARITY EQUATION

V2 X M2/V1 X M1 = n1/n2

M2 = V1 X M1 X n1/V2 X n2

Molarity of the given Potassium permanganate = M

b) Strength of KMnO4 = Molarity of KMnO4 (M2) x Molar mass of KMnO4

= g/l

RESULT :
a) Molarity of KMnO4 solution = M
b) Strength of KMnO4 = g/l
